Battlefield is not a gritty military simulation game and never has been, it is a large scale arcade FPS, often taking place in arenas based on real locations.
- 4 years ago@DJPtrak huh. Not real life yeah but BF 1/V were pretty gritty.. BF 4 had its moments. But BF was never an "Arcade" shooter. It is now tho...

@BuzzfunkHere's a list of previous Battlefield features that absolutely justify it being classified as an Arcade Shooter:
Respawns, Non realistic magazine loading, Bullet drop, Low Bullet velocity, Prototype weapons, Health Regeneration, Revives, Surviving small caliber headshots, Jeep Stuff, No friendly fire, Playing vs Bots, Instant entrance/exit of vehicles and equipment, Unlimited ammunition of equipment, Instant Vehicle repair, Fixing any kind of vehicle damage with a wrench, Reviving someone who was blown up/ set on fire, Gas duration, Grenade indicators, Enemy directional indicators, Mini maps, 3D spotting, Mini map Spotting, Nametags above players, Spotting flares, Universal ammo resupplies, Lack of body armor, Running after getting shot in the leg, Building fortifications in seconds, Unlimited parachutes, Low velocity parachuting, Shooting while parachuting, Anything to do with parachuting, etc., etc. - 4 years ago@Buzzfunk It's always been an arcade shooter.
- 4 years ago@GLOCK_IN_DA_SOCK Then we have a difference of opinion on what defines an Arcade shooter.
To me, Arcade shooters are games like Cod, halo etc. Its very easy to kill your opponent in it, at least for me. BF 3 and 4 were hard in the beginning. I died a LOT. Like a lot. I still suck at BF 1 and am better now at BF V.
2042 felt like an Arcade shooter (the beta) because i was immediately killing a lot of players (but haha no scoreboard so i have no idea really) without much effort. Granted this comes from a Doom and Quake area veteran so id say im better with mouse/keys than your average gamer. Guns had almost no recoil and there was almost zero team play (missing features didnt help of course).
So no, None of the past BF were Aracde shooters, IMO.
- RaginSam4 years agoSeasoned Ace@Buzzfunk Disagree with arcade part. Battlefield has always felt like an adult game, however the gameplay has never been realistic at all. I love that about this franchise though. I hate milsims with a passion. More recoil equals realism, right?!
I haven’t seen this commercial, but I’m sure that I would hate it to. They’re trying to market and sell the game though. I’m all for more people buying the game, that just means more people to play with. It also means that they’ll support the game better and longer if it sells well.
Every commercial isn’t for everyone. If I’m remembering correctly, in the beta characters were cursing. I’m sure the game will feel like an adult game on release.- 4 years ago
@RaginSamFirst off, don't be a smart a** 🙂. I never said more recoil=realism. I said, that the past BF games were a lot harder to learn than the 2042 beta. Which makes it more "Arcade" like to me. No one wants super realism in games anyways. Just felt like there was no strategic elements, no team play, just run and shoot. (in the beta). Hence how it ended up feeling to me.
- 4 years ago@dougieee Yes, I started with 1942 and worked on through. I loved BF2, especially the Commander feature to help encourage teamplay, as well as the ability to temporarily destroy commander call ins by running as a special forces. But I think there is psychological nostalgia among many veteran players who played the older games when they were younger, and often, these were some of the first large scale FPS games we played. For us at the time, they were the real deal, because we had never played anything like it before. By today's standards though, many of the older titles probably wouldn't hold up in a casual-competitive split environment any more than the new title.
There are many features from Battlefield 2 I would love to see come back, and Portal is a great opportunity and environment to do so. But if those features don't fit into the vision the devs have for the base game, or they have newer ideas they want to try out, that's fine by me. Those games weren't great because they did what everyone else was already doing.
