What is an LMG supposed to be in 2042?

An interesting quote from the recent interview was the part about how Avancys in is pre 2.1.1 state was more of an Assault rifle with a large mag and less of an LMG.

Fair is fair, the gun was over the top.

But this brings me to the question:

----------

What is an LMG supposed to be like within the context of 2042?

As far as I see, the LMGs have large magazines and larger movement penalties when ADS and longer recovery from sprint due their weight.

It definitely tries to drive the point home that they are supposed to be more defensive weapons where one uses a bipod to better hold an area.

But mobility is simply king in a game like 2042, being less mobile makes one more of an easy target for both more mobile weapons and marksmen looking for a head to pop like a watermelon.

---------

IRL an LMG suppresses enemies because of its abundance of bullets to fire and the fact that every single bullet can be lethal.

But this is not an OHK game nor death means more than a respawn timer/revive. So an LMG cannot be scary for the same reason it is scary IRL.

In older titles with the (disliked) suppression mechanic the LMG had value as a means of causing that state on enemies.

But we do not have anything like that now in 2042.

--------

Because of that I generally consider the 2042 LMGs to be just there for the sake of existing while other guns can do the killing better while having shorter openings for enemies to shoot back.

Why would I want to use an LMG over the M5A3 or the SFAR for general purposes? Why would I use an LMG for longer ranges? Why would I use an LMG for shorter ranges?

---------

So I am feeling that LMGs are not carving their own niche within BF2042.

How would you suggest they could gain something to help them stand out for more than their mag size (which is already is counterbalanced by several demerits)?

More damage? Velocity? Penetration? Even more Bipod benefits? A unique mechanic?

I am curious about how others feel about all this

@Bolvard Indeed, LMGs have similar stats akin to older games but with the removal of suppression, they have been given no 'compensatory buff' in return.

@Trokey66 I cannot compare well with older titles but the LMGs, (at least the Avancys) seem to have a smaller spread increase per shot than other guns. Maybe it alludes to better accuracy in sustained fire but maybe the randomization of the recoil after X shots negates that.

@UP_Hawxxeye Couldn't go into the exact specifics of their stats but relatively speaking, compared to other weapon classes, they have the negatives of previous games but lack the major compensatory positive that was suppression.

With suppression gone, that 'positive' hasn't been replaced with anything so the become almost pointless as every other weapon class has better stats.

BFV tried doing things differently with more stationary LMGs. But that wasn't really very fun for anyone.

Weapons are a "joke" in computer-games. In real life, soldiers almost only use ARs and LMGs are stationary weapons. In games LMGs and SMGs have to behave unrealistic and the ARs have to be nerfed, for things to make any "sense" - otherwise SMGs/LMGs would be more or less useless and ARs dominate at all ranges when playing as infantry. The problem is that Dice has to make the guns behave unrealistic, but players still insists on comparing the guns in the game, to how real-life guns works. I think BF1 and BF4 worked ok regarding LMGs and Dice should look at how things were balanced in those games.

Personally, I don't think suppression was any fun in BF3/BF4/BF1. Just spraying a gun "without aiming" should not really be a viable game-play mechanic and I think the game is better without suppression. If Dice can find a way of implementing suppression without just introducing a lot of weapon-spread on the receiving end, perhaps it could work.

  • @UP_Hawxxeye All LMG ammo should do damage to ALL vehicles except the main battle tanks. AP LMG ammo should do additional to vehicles.
  • I agree that the concept of a LMG doesn't really make sense in the context of BF2042.

I wouldn't mind a return to the BF1 (and BF2142 mechanic?) where the LMGs gets more accurate as you fire them.  Seemed silly at first, but I grew to love it, really made the LMG's feel like something other than an Assault rifle with a big magazine.
