what is with the sniper rifles in this game?

I could be wrong, so please feel free to tell me where I might be going wrong with this in general!

I recently decided to play 2042 with my boyfriend, after being a long time enjoyer of 1, and a casual dabbler in 4. My favorite class to play is Scout/Recon, since it lets me play a role I like (I like helping by finding enemies and staying out of large squabbles, I'm not very good at them.)

I got pretty good in 1, I'm far from great, but I've found a couple weapons that work for me and can generally squeeze out an ok K:D.

In picking up 2042, I picked Recon (Caspar) and noticed https://tutuappx.com/....

This one sniper rifle, the only one I can use, feels so.... bad? I cannot land any shots unless it's at a super specific distance, I can't change zeroing, I can't even figure out it's exact range.

What's going on with this gun? Is it just this one, or is there something I'm missing? It feels like I can spend forever working on getting the angles and the distance right and nothing ever works. And it also feels like people can just spray with an automatic weapon from halfway across the map and I just instantly die.

I honestly don't understand this gun (and this specific games gunplay) and it's getting frustrating.

  • @s1hiron00 Play portal. Make your own servers and set your own bullet velocities & damage models. You can change almost everything in portal and get the game feeling how you want 👍🏼
  • Zeroing the rifle is one of the many so-called "legacy features" that DICE removed from BF2042. They also didn't bother to make accurate reticle markings on most of the scopes.

  • the recon class has been so neglected....

we are at season 4 soon and we only have 2 bolt action rifle from the beginning of the game to use (not including vault) all this time.

season 4 is on the horizon with a new recon specialist and she doesn't even come with any new bolt action rifle to accommodate

her entry.... what are these people smoking?  meanwhile there is a ton of SMG and assault rifles, so many i have to use the mouse scroll wheel to go through them....

this game is so disappointing... and you wonder why the servers are empty.

  • @s1hiron00 As someone who has played quite a bit of sniper since Bf2, 2042's sniper gameplay loop feels...off. If you want to be a traditional sniper where you're sitting at a long range, its really hard to do. Most of the sniper mains I see in the game are often doing medium and close range quick sniping. Long range where you're lining up your shot just isn't worth it for a bunch of reasons.

    1. Bullet velocity does feel like its a bit slower by 10-20%? So it takes some getting used too

    2. There's some really easy counters to snipers. TV missiles from Lis and Sundance flying specialist most notably

    3. Assault rifles/LMGs do feel like they're much more effective at long ranges than before. Which like you said, you see that really effective counter fire from players who are running things like those weapons.

    4. You have very noticeable scope glint for scopes that are above x4. Making it quite easy to tell when someone is aiming at you before they even fire. Easy to dodge the bullets. This combined with very large bullet tracers, kill cams, directional hit indicators ; snipers just aren't that effective in any role.

And another thing, the best snipers in the game right now are MacKay and Angel, not a recon class (welcome to 2042). MacKay you get a grapple gun which lets you get to vertical places you wouldn't normally be able to get to. Useful for sniping to get to a place where only 2 specialists can probably get to you (another Mackay or sundance). With Angel, he's another best sniper because he gets infinite ammo. Which means you can stay sniping for longer and not have to worry about that. And for the first sniper you unlock, you can eventually get bullets that don't have a tracer. Which luckily knocks out at least one of those counters for sniping.

But yeah, sniping game is garbage in this game. I have a few friends who love sniping in these games and they can't stand 2042's implementation of it. I play a lot of sniper, but I often main vehicles or support. So I still have something to do in 2042.

I think something they need to do for recon is disable scope glint for snipers when playing a recon class. Without something that big, there's no way in hell they'll ever offer something better than "infinite ammo" specialist or "go to any location you want" specialist.

Sadly you can't range your shots very well in this with snipers. Which is odd because the M5 recoilless range markers do work perfectly. Sometimes you can shoot a spot, put the mark exactly in the same spot and go again, and the round will go somewhere else.

  • @s1hiron00 Since you're a BF1 player one big change is that there is no sweet spot mechanic for sniping before or after BF1 so that may be part of why you feel so ineffective.
  • The statement I am about to make will most likely be unpopular regardless of it being truth.

If, for whatever reason, you are an individual with “above average” knowledge, understanding and experience with real life firearms,…

…forget everything you know about reality.

My daughter had a similar issue as I have provided her with a battery of training not unlike Ranger School since she was about 10 years old.

She kept trying to factor in bullet drop based on caliber, MOA and the various other elements.  Once I told her to forget that all, she started doing really well.

Figure out what each weapon does isn’t the game, find one that works with your play-style, trigger control, etc.,…

    …and have fun.
