Why is game not free to play?

What is this current obsession with free-to-play. Do people not know how economics works! Most so-called 'free to play games are misnomer imo... Are just not that, the microtransactions cost far more than any base price! I really don't want Battlefield becoming World of Tanks or War thunder with insane grinds and stupidly expensive DLC...
@JediMastaWyn well as it is now, u get to play tripple A premium price + a premium "battlepass" and all u get is to wait another 12 months for the game to have content. Most content is 100% copypasted, do the same thing, looks the same. F-ing hell game been out a week and in my limited sparetime ive already unlocked everything and got boored of the maps, never experienced anything like it. If this game was free i wouldnt be mad, but atleast id get what i didnt pay for
