Direct chat to ANY player directly (friend or foe) could be useful I guess but I'm not sure how.
As far as open channel to everyone on the server, that should never happen. It serves no purpose. 90% of the text chat I see every game has zero value to the game being played. There are other way to communicate with people playing online as well.

Hence the option to turn it off if you don't want to see it, all anyone is asking for is the ability to opt in if they want.
Honestly, I don't understand the reasoning behind ever removing it in the first place.

I would prefer the option of people to opt in rather than opt out of being spammed with a lot of nonsense they don't want or need.
As far as reasoning, I think a few potential reasons were stated in the thread,

Dice are from Sweden, one of the most "woke" countries in the world (I live in Denmark, we are not at the same level but almost...).
They should try introducing a thing called choice, instead of forcing their political agendas on people.
A lot of older players would like the all-chat and an easy solution would be to make an opt-in-system, let people decide themselves.
