I'm struggling to believe the company made this decision as it seems unfair, illogical and unnecessarily complicated. Am I understanding this correctly?

You had to buy one of the crossgen bundles on the store to get both old and new gen (The only way to get both was digital) None of the disc versions come with both versions.

Your progress carries over, but you have to buy the game again if you want the new gen version.

You are understanding correctly as it was only the standard digital PS5 and Xbox S/X versions that had the upgrade added to the standard editions (Edit: the Gold and Ultimate editions for PS4/XB1 also have the cross-gen bundle).

Unfortunately, as it states in the article, there isn't an upgrade path currently. That could change in the future but at the moment you'd need to by the Xbox S/X version.

As much as I feel they should offer an upgrade option to those with previous gen copies of the game, they can't be held responsible for what media outlets write.  Also, that quote you posted is regarding cross-progression, not upgrades free or otherwise.  

Initially, the only way to get cross-progression was through the Gold or Ultimate Editions.  They caught a lot of flak for this as there are friends on both new and previous gen systems that want to play together.  ....and no one wants to have to buy two copies of the game at full pop or spend the extra dough on a special edition copy they don't want. 

....so then they extended the cross-gen bundle to copies of the standard, next-gen game.  This was only on digital copies though, not physical. 

Personally, I thought it was quite clear in the PS store when I bought my game copy.  The PS4 one says just PS4.  The PS5 one says "cross-gen" and has both the PS4 and PS5 logos.  There is also a list of everything each purchase comes with.

I honestly don't see it ever happening.

Imagine the rage EA/Dice would get from people who bought it a second time just to get on new gen, if they made it a free upgrade later. Im sure the fact that it isn't possible now means it never will be.

Yeah, that could get ugly really fast but then again, I don't see why they couldn't offer such a thing later down the line.  Heck, the game went on sale just about a month after it's release and we can expect steeper discounts in the future.  ....but to do it now would be brutal.     

@Psubond I might need to edit my post a bit further as it's more about that standard PS4/XB1 version. I guess you bought the Gold or Ultimate edition since that had both bundled originally?

In all honesty I think it's really unlikely too @BizzyVaping. I'm trying to be an optimist more than anything else.
