BF2042 Makes GPU Fan Speeds Go Nuts

Hi everyone,

As the title suggests, as soon as I boot up BF2042 my graphics card fan speeds ramp up to 100%

It does this as soon as the menu loads, fans normalise while loading, and ramp up to 100% again in-game.

My graphics card doesn't do this with any other game, NONE!

Has anyone else come accross this problem?

I have uninstalled the GPU drivers with DDU and reinstalled the latest ones.

I have the latest GPUTweak III. I even tried MSI Afterbuner.

The fan speeds in Afterburner or GPUTweak get completely overridden. In any other game, or just in Windows, I can manually control the GPU fans or set the fan curves, but in BF2042 all fan curves are ignored and they ramp up to 100% every time I start the game. It is very strange!

If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it.

My PC Specs:

Windows 11 Pro 64-bit (10.0, Build 22000) (22000.co_release.210604-1628)

ASUS Strix X570-E    BIOS: 4403 (type: UEFI)
AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 8-Core Processor (16 CPUs), ~4.1GHz

ASUS Strix NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080

RAM: Corsair Vengeance  32GB   4,000Mhz

Audio: iFi DAC (by AMR) HD+ USB Audio)

  • @R4DiC4L First Uninstall afterburner and gpu tweak with REVO UNINSTALLER, Reboot.
You need to uninstall GPU drivers in normal mode first, then in safe mode you delete any leftovers with DDU ! (reboot without internet conneection)

Now boot up windows without internet connection
Make sure you got driver already pre downloaded, and install your latest gpu driver (so microsoft does not install their driver).
After install latest gpu driver without internet connection reboot and reconnect internet , now install your GPU tweak software and test again !

    Cheers

    Hi Atic

With vsync on CPU 35°C GPU 50°C
With Vsync off CPU 39°C GPU 66°C

So vsync off does increase my temps, but that doesn't explain why it ramps up my GPU fans to 100% or why I cannot use GPUTweak when vsync is turned off.
66°C isn't that hot, my fan curves aren't set to run at 100% for 66°C. Also, I cannot adjust the fans manually in GPUTweak (or Afterbuner) with vsnyc off.

As soon as vsync is off, GPU software stops working.

Something is going wrong between BF2042, nvidia drivers and GPU software with vsync off.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

This sounds very odd indeed... I had the opposite problem when I bought my 3080 recently, but I simply installed Afterburner and tweaked my fan curves to cool my card down and it works fine. I run vsync OFF and this doesn't affect my custom fan curve.

My only guess is maybe your two software are fighting with each other? If your fan curve is set how you want, you're not reaching the threshold for the fan curve to push up and only hitting 66 you're right, there's no reason it should be doing that. Maybe try fully uninstalling either Afterburner or GPUTweak and only use one and see. Like I said I use Afterburner with vsync off perfectly fine, newest drivers on my 3080.

  • Thanks, I’m glad someone finally agrees that this is odd, rather than telling me I have a temps problem.

I have built my own PCs for years and have never come across this problem before.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling to no avail.
Originally I had GPUTweak, but heard many people raving about Afterburner, so I uninstalled GPUTweak and installed Afterburner. Then after some time, this problem developed, so I uninstalled Afterburber and went back to GPUTweak.

I’ve also uninstalled Nvidia drivers in safe mode using DDU, and reinstalled the latest drivers. That didn’t help either.

I’m stumped, I have no idea why tuning off vsync would stop my fan curves and gpu software working.

Next step would be to do a fresh install of Windows, but I don’t really want to.

Yes, there is a conflict somewhere, I can’t figure out where though. Doing a clean install of drivers and gpu software doesn’t help either. ‘: /
  • At this point my best guess is having both GPU softwares DID end up conflicting but deeper, maybe in Windows, regardless of which is installed or uninstalled. I've heard of things like this happening, not specifically with GPUs, but with software and windows even when uninstalling a problem program. I know how annoying reinstalling Windows is but it may be the fix, just maybe. If you do end up going that route, just make sure to not install both next time lol.

EDIT: Before doing that though I suggest a game repair if you haven't yet, since that's the easiest thing to try. My 2042 has NEEDED a repair like twice now all on it's own.
