@BenKenewbyTry this:
Unplug the controller and any devices connected to the USB that you're not using and go to Device Manager (right click the Start button and select it). Click the "View" tab and select "Show hidden devices". Expand the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" section at the bottom and right-click and Uninstall each device that's greyed out. Plug your controller back in and it should automatically reinstall the drivers. If nothing happens when you plug it back in, click on the "Scan for hardware changes" button to force detect it.
Launch the game (with Steam input still disabled) and see if it's recognizing the controller.

I’m having the same issue.
how I’m able to play with a controller still isopen the controller configuration settings for your controller
Go to presetsswitch it from game pad to key board and mouse.
then you’ll just have to do some minor key bindings and sensitivity adjustments and you should be good
