Matchmaking splits the playerbase into multiple empty servers after a match

Product: Battlefield 2042
Platform:Xbox Series X
Please specify your platform model. Microsoft Xbox Series X
Are you using any software with an overlay? No
Which part of the game is the issue happening in? Multiplayer
Which part of the mode? Breakthrough
Please select your region Australia
On which server did this happen? All servers since season 2
When did this happen? (dd.mm.yy hh:mm) I play daily from 9pm
Summarize your bug Since the second week of Season 2, I've noticed the matchmaking puts you into a full or mostly full server. You finish that game and it them puts you into am empty server with players waiting. I know the players from the previous match are having the same issue because some stream the game and you can look them up to see they are going through the same matchmaking issue. Its a constant repeat cycle of search and join only to find empty servers then it eventually puts you back in the full server with most of the players you last played with. Clearly the player numbers may be low, but its matchmaking everyone into multiple empty servers instead of pooling us together so we can continue to play the next map. This wastes so much time just to find a match, and causes some to just give up and stop playing. It's happening on all modes, like Breakthrough and Conquest.even on the 24/7 modes.
How often does the bug occur? Often (50% - 99%)
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? play the game
What happens when the bug occurs? Give up playing the game because we cant find any.
What should be happening instead? If the player count is low the matchmaking algorithm needs to keep the servers populated with real players and keep them together. Whats the point is we all can find a game it we are put into empty lobbies waiting for people to join when we know there are people playing but we are being split apart.

  • Here's a prime example of the broken state of BF2042 matchmaking.

Battlefield 2042 - matchmaking is broken - YouTube

I finished a game of Conquest 128 AOW that had 84 human players online.

I then tried to get into another Conquest 128 AOW server and the broken matchmaking system placed me into THREE completely empty servers in a row.

Pretty sure the other 83 players from the match I just finished didn't all decide to stop playing at the same time.

Matchmaking is quite simply the single most broken feature of this game.

You can keep on trying to patch and tweak the smaller broken features of this game but until you address the elephant in the room he's still going to be there (albeit dressed in a cute purple skin with weapon charm earrings and aviator sunglasses).

It's not much use installing a cute set of fuzzy dice (get it?) to hang on the rear vision mirror if the car won't start.

    Kap.

In my last 6+ matches, I have gone from a full server to waiting for players. Sometimes I have to wait for an entire server worth of players to join me. How can I end a round with 63 other players, then magically all of them are gone and I am waiting for new players to join? This is not a one-time thing, it is happening after EVERY round.

DICE what is going on? This happened a few times before, but since the update, it is happening to me every time. I am on the East Coast of the US playing midday, SteamCharts shows this is an average active player count window, so it is not for a lack of players in the game. They all can't be surfing the store.

I would just like to know why some players (like me) are separated from 63 other players in a 64-player instance immediately following a match, but it would seem most, if not all of them are staying together for the next instance.

  • I just assume this is because the number of players queued for a match isn't cleanly divisible by 64.

Sure you may end a match with 64 players that all get recycled into the queue, but what about the dozen other guys that were already waiting in the queue?

The guys in the queue first probably get priority.  They 'took' your spot and you get to wait for the next train to pull into the station.

Of the 64 players that get dumped back into the queue at the same time I would be interested to know how priority gets assigned among those players. Random? Alpha numeric sort?

@AngrySquid270 I can definitely understand the players in the queue getting priority, but it just seems odd that this just started happening to me right after the latest patch. It has happened before, but usually only once or twice, not every round.

It seems that everything is randomized, but I could be wrong, that is just how it feels. However, it would be interesting to hear how they do it.

Matchmaking has always been pretty broken.

Some rounds we start with 10 or 11 players on each side and it stays that way for the entire round and then the next and the next and so on.

It seems highly improbable to me that not one new player is looking to play in that entire time.
