Hi @CheekyPE To confirm for Battlefield 2042, it has required a subscription since the launch of the game. I play on a Series X at home and have always needed one. You can confirm from Microsoft's store page here.
Going with either just Xbox Gold or Game Pass Ultimate (which offer Gold accesses as well) will give the required Xbox subscription to play online.
