I am glad you added this last bit, as I imagine you're not going to be successful connecting with friends if EA app thinks you are offline.
Are you sure it displays "offline" when you are playing multi-player matches?
@DarthFDG I solved this problem this way: I downloaded the Origin client, installed it and installed a patch to remove the window about the need to update to the EA App. Now I can normally expand the overlay during the game, and my friend can also join my group (he plays through the EA App). So it goes.
