I have noticed same thing with ROG Theta 7.1 surround headphones.
I can even SEE the problem while game is running using the Armoury Crate ROG software running on side monitor while game is playing. I can see that the RL/RR channels are completely flat and silent - nothing at all coming from them. Only centre FL/FR and SL/SR have sound.
Which means the "surround" from the game ONLY comes from front 180 degrees of sound field - nothing at all from rear 180 degrees.
And yes the main characters voice is barely audible for some reason. Fixed after reboot.
I grabbed below image as BF2042 was running and lots of sound going on around me. Only 4 channels (and centre) do anything.#
The two REAR channels are dead always.
I understand that game says it uses a 5.1 audio mix in surround, but with many of us having as much as eight extra CPU cores sitting around doing nothing (over the 8 it apparently uses) couldn't high-end PC users use at least one extra full core to do proper full 7.1 sound processing?
I don't believe this issue has to do with the cores being used to process audio. It's more likely just not set up properly on the game side (Frostbite). It's likely that QA doesn't test for audio issues such as these, and that the audio team was probably testing on Xbox or PlayStation dev kits. At least... I hope this was the case.
The Battlefield series is known for its audio, and so having this game does not properly output in surround on PC is a shame. Is there anyway to get this bug over to the devs at Dice so that we can guarantee visibility?

They've fixed this issue on the latest patch (3.1). It's not included in the patch notes, but I just tested and it now works.
Keep in mind that this is 5.1 only. As stated in their options menu, the native mix is 5.1.

Do you set the audio to surround or auto? It didn't fix it for me in 3.1
