Stuttering/lag/screen freezing

This has been an issue probably after the last 2-3 updates.  I've done all the usual things; cleared the cache, updated video drivers (clean install), disabled any overlays, etc.

Problem is that when I first load into the game, there are some serious lag issues that actually freeze my screen for up to one second, but it can often be just a few stutters in a row.  This can last for a few minutes into gameplay after joining a server.  Gets me killed pretty quick when the freeze happens just as I encounter another player.  Short skips can happen randomly anytime in the game, it's more rare, but the worst almost always happens right after I join the server.  Sometimes it even affects sound, my on-screen actions and the associated sound can be delayed by a few seconds, and even the textures load slowly on occasion, though I care far less about that than I do the stutter/freeze/lag getting me killed.

Win 10, 3080 GPU, SSD, i9-12900.  System specs are not an issue, I've lowered the graphics and many features for lower detail/higher performance to get the best FPS.

Any suggestions?

  • Which cache files are you clearing. Battlefield has always had DX12 shader compilation stutters due to the game compiling shaders while playing the game.

    DX12 shader compile stutter will always be worse after a game update or video driver update because they both clear the DX12 shader cache and all the shaders have to be recompiled during gameplay.

    After playing through a map a few times you should see a reduction in stutters.

    Documents/Battlefield 2042/cache

    Is the cache. - though I think it’s moved? Not wt my computer right now to verify.

    I don’t know if it’s the DX12 issue, it’s a continuing issue well after any update. I had it again today and last Nvidia update was probably 3 weeks ago, I easily played every other day.

    @Ympakt Cache folder moved to:

    C:\Users\YOUR_USERNAME\AppData\Local\BattlefieldGameData.kin-release.Win32\cache

    Delete all content and try again.

    Cheers

    Yep, that's the one.  Cleared it and still have the issue.

  • FTR - no solution.  Still happens, but a couple of BF2042 updates and the issue seems to have lessened.
