Battlefield’s Rules Don’t Fit Modern Warfare

Everyone seems to want vehicles nerfed, but many of the biggest changes in warfare since World War II have come from vehicles: helicopters, modern tanks, mechanized infantry, and precision air power.

If Battlefield does not make vehicles powerful enough to shape the battle, there is little point in using a modern-war setting. If players mainly want large infantry gunfights, that is closer to special-forces combat, which Call of Duty already focuses on.

Maybe what many Battlefield players actually want is World War II or World War I, when vehicles had not yet become so dominant.

  • I get it, but we don't want vehicles to be weak—we want them balanced. For example, it makes no sense for a tank to take down a helicopter, right? Logically, a helicopter should have a slight edge over a tank. Similarly, it would be crazy for a Gepard to be stronger than a tank. The issue is that attack helicopters are currently far stronger than any other vehicle in the game. The Gepard is supposed to counter attack helicopters, but that’s not what happens—do you see the lack of balance? Personally, I think the Gepard is perfectly balanced against jets, but it gets easily taken out by attack helicopters; a Gepard pilot stands no chance in a 1v1 against a helicopter crew (pilot plus gunner). This really ruins the game's balance. Sure, many Gepard players are terrible—it's a genuine skill issue—but even experienced players struggle to go head-to-head with an attack helicopter crew. The Gepard is just too weak, even in skilled hands. Players report various issues here because, in previous titles, mobile AA was a powerhouse—as it should be against helicopters—preventing them from wiping out all the infantry in minutes. In this Battlefield, however, the developers lack a bit of vision. This has killed not only match balance but also the desire of many players to keep playing. It’s one of several reasons why the game is slowly dying; unfortunately, it seems the developers refuse to see it.

The attack chopper has more than a "slight edge" over MBTs. They just spam you to death with their lock-on missiles after you use your first smoke.

And it's laughable how easily they take down the mobile AA without lock-on missiles even needed.

They buffed attack chopper offensive abilities in one of the updates and the balance is completely broken now.

I agree. I think it's completely wrong for an attack helicopter to carry that many TOW missiles—the pilot can fire them, and the gunner has anti-tank missiles plus heavy rockets. On top of that, the gunner's rounds deal massive damage to tank armor, especially the Gepard's. Not to mention the excessive armor on attack helicopters, their mobility and speed, and the low-altitude radar mechanics that heavily favor them; it's killing the game. Unfortunately, EA games aren't fair like they used to be. Poor Gepard—it's been the worst vehicle in the game since launch; DICE simply ignores the players. It's sad, but true.

  • We see how vehicles are working out in Ukraine. Helicopters are next to non existent because they’re shot out of the sky almost instantly. Tanks are eaten by drones.

Infantry controlled  Drones eat them all alive. We need this if BF6.

  • it's also a video game and it needs to be balanced and actually what has changed modern combat is drones not vehicles.

I think referring to the situation in Ukraine is misleading in the context of this game.

Battlefield presents itself as a game about large-scale total war, yet it largely ignores the paradigm shifts that have emerged from the war in Ukraine. Instead, it falls back on older ideas: CIA conspiracies, shadowy military-industrial interests, and similar Cold War-era themes.

In other words, within Battlefield’s own fictional world, it almost feels as though the war in Ukraine never happened.

  • There are plenty of Gepards shooting down Russian attack helicopters—but anyway, it’s just a game, not real life. Still, mobile AA urgently needs improvements across the board against attack helicopters—regarding aiming, damage, survivability, and equipment.
