DICE: Is the sound broken?

I have wasted so much time trying to get the sound settings so that I can foot steps, hear directional fire. I found a setting that worked ok for a couple of small maps, but was not much use on bigger maps. I've come to a theory your sound environment is not only different on different maps, but also broken.

DICE, what is going on?

  • Footsteps were horribly done in BF6.

Go load up a 2042 match if you need confirmation. You’ll hear enemy footsteps reliably and consistently with the same audio hardware.

The lack of proper situational awareness via missing enemy footstep sounds in BF6 is amateur hour level sound design. There are games 20 years old that have better directional footstep sounds.

  • It's definitely broken. I've made countless posts about it and it's fallen on deaf ears... No pun intended.

I have people run up on me and I hear nothing until I'm dead. Sometimes I never hear the footsteps at all. But friendly footsteps I hear perfectly fine. I think it's an enemy and I turn to look and get blasted in the back. Tanks can come right up behind me and I hear nothing. I die and then bear the engine roar. Makes no sense and no adjustments in the game will fix it. Trust me, I've tried! I think that BFV has the best footsteps and what direction they were coming from by far!

Not to mention when jets fly over it's so loud it drowns everything else out.

There isn't even a sound (metal hitting the ground) for a grenade landing next to you let alone an indicator you're near an enemy grenade. Sorry for going a little off topic there.

    It's definitely a problem.

I never hear enemy footsteps. Suddenly there is just an enemy right behind me or 10 ft in front of me and I am mowed down.

Same with the sound of a grenade landing close to you. You never hear it. Hopefully you see that little red ball coming towards you. That's about it.

I like Battlefield 6 in many ways and I do hope that the Devs will be able to make some fixes to the audio.

  • For me its not as immersive as previous games, especially BF1 which I think was the pinacle of audio design.  That said, there are times when the sound is pretty fantastic when all battlefield elements are present, IE aircraft, tanks, building damage, etc.

I have had to enable Headphone 3D on windows and only then could I get spacial audio to work in game.

    Still, its pretty great.

Regarding missing sound, this was really bad in 2042 where tanks would appear right behind you, no sound.  So far, its not too bad for me with BF6, but I understand the issue as it can be frustrating when an object suddenly appears out of nowhere.

Just died to a squad of 4 running in front of me with no footsteps...

  • Fix the sound! At least make it like in BFV. I've tried different modes in BF6, checked it in-game, but I can't hear the sound of approaching enemies. It's terrible!

  • Dollar Store sound design. 30 ton main battle tanks 10 yards away make no sounds when idling. IRL an Abrams sounds like a **bleep** jet engine while idling and you can hear one coming a mile away.
