How are people with 120+ lag on top of scoreboards?

I'm trying to understand how this is possible. I have to play with 65ms on average myself, as servers in my own region are dead, and it very much feels like a heavy handicap. But somehow I very regularly see people with heavy lags outlined in yellow or red topping my scoreboard.

I'm not a great player, so maybe it's just the skill gap, but considering how incredibly crappy the netcode feels at my lag, I'm just wondering how those people seemingly manage. Anyone with some knowledge of how netcode works to enlighten me?

  • The reason for it is that shots are registered client-side, so an aggressive high ping player can peek around a corner and shoot you before it registers on your screen. It's a know advantage of high ping players to play aggressively, or the advantage doesn't work. That's why as a low ping player, it seems like an aggressive high ping player has already killed you before you can even react and hence they get top scoreboard placements.
