My thoughts after the 7 day trial.

This is not a rant, just my thoughts having played the 7 day trial.

Let me preface this by saying I am by no means a BF veteran. I started with BF3 but it was difficult to play as BF3 did not have colour-blindness correction options so I'd end up shooting anything that moved, but I have played every title since then (yes even Hardline, which I really enjoyed). For the last couple of years I've pretty much played BF2042/Portal (my own modes with my friends) and BFV. The state of 2042 at-launch was the reason I have not purchased 6, and to be honest, having played the 7 day trial, even with the Black Friday discounts, I'm still not convinced I'll pick it up for a while.  Let me explain the pros/cons as I see them.

  1. Map Size - this has been mentioned numerous times, but in comparison to other maps in the series, there just doesn't feel like there's any 'room-to-breathe'. It feels more COD-friendly with the emphasis on getting into the action instantly and probably dying/respawning. In 2042 but more-so in V and 1, I felt the maps afforded more strategy ("spawn on X, sneak across the outside of the map to capture Y and hold it for as long as possible"). Obviously the trial was just 3 maps, but my understanding is the Eastwood is one of the biggest in 6, and that really felt like a mid size map at best.
  2. Challenges (UI) - really awful UI experience. The dozens of achievements/challenges pushed at me to the end-of-round screen which is like some sort of epileptic-inducing mash-up of sounds and screens and scrolling and other nonsense.  Surely you can simplify this to a single screen. BF1 gave you a simple, clean summary. BFV was OK with this as well. BF6 is an unmitigated mess. One screen. Get it done. Move on.
  3. Challenges (general) - someone on this forum has also said challenges ruin the experience, since people are no longer working for team objectives but individual objectives. When they have to do nonsensical challenges like ride a golf cart for x distance - why? what does riding a golf cart have to do with reviving a teammate or capturing an objective. Challenge us to work together ("revive 5 teammates, capture 5 objectives, spot-assist 10 enemies, hold an objective for 600 seconds").
  4. Amazing sound - I felt the sound design in BF6 was first rate. The sound of planes overhead and explosives nearby was terrific. For those that picked up BFV, the sound of the Stuka preparing to swoop down comes to mind. Sound is excellent. I'd love the kill-confirmed ping from BF1 to come back but that's just me. Sounds is terrific.
  5. Graphics. Also very good. As mentioned above I'm colour-blind but I genuinely stopped in my tracks to view the environment. Blackwell fields (?) looked particularly atmospheric. Eastwood felt a bit 2042 (colourful but not "Battlefield") for me and I couldn't really enjoy Cairo too much as the action was non-stop.  The "gold standard" for me is BF1, absolutely stunning maps that reeked of war and bloody action.  Some of the visual effects, like the smoke from the rubble of a destroyed building was great. Couldn't see a thing - created that extra bit of tension.
  6. Portal. I'd love to build the same modes that I worked on in 2042, but the trial didn't give me the chance to do so. I built a couple of simple servers, but couldn't fire them up. Fair enough, I haven't paid for anything so you can decide what you give me to look at. No complaints.  I did quickly have a look at the portal builder website as well as the Godot interface. I was surprised for instance, that there was a TDM mode in the full game, but no TDM mode in Portal, this doesn't make sense to me. I don't care about XP, I make modes for fun so that everyone has a good time. You can give me zero XP and if I've enjoyed my time I'll be back for more. Portal, like 2042/Portal seems really lacking (again). Where's VTDM?  In Gadot, am I correct in assuming you can't remove assets from existing maps, or copy an asset from map A to map B (even if both maps are BF6 official maps?). Why not? These feel like artificial restrictions, "we'll give you the tools, but we'll tie your hands behind you back." Give the community the opportunity to really go to town and things will soar. You've clipped our wings. I hope you develop the EA/BF6/Portal pages to include a full range of tutorials and guides and keep whatever official documentation up-to-date as Portal develops over time.

So, I'll wait. I'll wait for BF6 to introduce bigger maps so I can play with a bit more thought and take a breath. I'll wait to see what kind of support you offer to Portal and how far you'll let us go. I'll wait to see if you stop your obsession with challenges or change them to reflect what Battlefield has always claimed to be about - PTFO. I know a lot people enjoy challenges, and I'm not advocating for their removal, I just think there are cleaner UI choices to be made, particularly at the end-of-round screens and better challenges to reflect a more team-based effort.

There's a lot to be really happy about in BF6, it's night and day in comparison to 2042 in terms of sounds, atmosphere, graphics (you listened to the community and went back to Battlefield's roots)- and there's certainly some interesting mechanics around game play, the foundation feels solid. I just don't know what it wants to become, a "quick fix" dopamine shooter similar to dozens of shooters out there, or a solid battlefield experience. Only time will tell.

Finally, thank-you, a 7 day trial was unexpected and very welcome. I got to play BF6 and I had a good time, the pros outweighed the cons. I'll drop into REDSEC from time to time to see how the games coming along, I hope it's another outstanding entry in the franchise.
