Practice Servers

Since I know how frustrating it can be for more experienced jet and heli pilots to see a newbie hop in just to crash, I have been trying to practice in the practice servers, but it’s extremely frustrating when you’re getting spawn camped by others. I finally get in a jet (of course I don’t last long because I’m still learning) and have to fight my way into another. It’s exhausting. Is there a way to practice without other players? I’ve tried some practice servers with no players on, but there’s no vehicles in them.

TruckerClint I can definitely see where you're coming from on this one. Learning jets and helicopters is tough enough without spending half your time waiting for a vehicle to respawn or getting blown up before you can even practice a maneuver. This is why I stay on the ground. I am terrible at flying, so I leave this one up to my buddies.

One thing I'm curious about: are you mostly focused on basic flight controls and handling, or are you working on things like dogfighting, rocket runs, and vehicle combat? And when you're jumping into those practice/community servers, are you finding servers with vehicles but too many pilots, or mostly empty servers that don't seem to have the aircraft available at all?

Honestly, I think there are probably quite a few newer pilots in the same boat. If there were a dedicated training experience with aircraft always available and no combat pressure, would that be something you'd use regularly, or would you prefer a bot-supported environment where you could actually practice against targets without fighting other players for vehicles?

I don’t mind the dogfighting and getting shot down. That can only make me better. I was a decent pilot in bf2, but I used a joystick and bf6 is not great with joystick. MNK is not natural for me flying lol. It’s taking time. I am joining a lot of practice servers that don’t have jets or helis. When I do find one that has them, the spawn area is being camped by infantry with spawn beacons, shooting me as soon as I spawn. When I finally clear it enough to get in a jet or heli, I get taken out by jet or heli before I get lifted off.

I would use practice servers with bots only to learn, but I’m not sure how much I’d use it once I feel comfortable enough to join populated servers.

TruckerClint It doesn't sound like the flying itself is the biggest hurdle right now; it sounds like you're struggling to find enough uninterrupted seat time to even practice before the fight starts. Going from a joystick in BF2 to mouse and keyboard in BF6 is already a pretty big adjustment, so having to deal with spawn camping and experienced pilots at the same time definitely doesn't make that learning curve any easier. I couldn't use a kb/m to save my life in this game. I have always had to use a controller, and even then, it was an adjustment.

When you do finally get some time in the air, is it the jet handling itself that's giving you the most trouble, or things like lining up attack runs, managing speed, and winning dogfights? It might be useful to hear what setups or training routines other pilots are using as well.

One thing I'd be curious about is how other pilots got over that hump. For those of you who learned jets or helicopters in BF6, what helped the most: custom keybinds, specific maps, Portal experiences, or just lots of repetition?
