Removing Gauntlet is forced playlist migration—Here is how to fix it
I am writing this because I am completely done with Rapid Royale, and I know I am not alone. I’ve tried it multiple times, and it simply does not capture a single ounce of what made Gauntlet special. One of the absolute worst parts of Rapid Royale is how much it ruins the pacing of the game. I don’t like the fact that you spend less time actually playing the game and more time just sitting there dead, waiting for teammates to run around and capture enough redeploy tokens just to get a revive. Gauntlet kept the momentum going, but this new mode just rewards waiting around on a spectator screen.
We need to talk honestly about why Gauntlet was removed, because the corporate excuse of "low player count and long queue times" does not add up. I play out of the UK on the London servers, and up until the exact day it was removed, my lobbies were consistently 100% full with near-instant matchmaking times. The reality is that Europe had a thriving, deeply dedicated Gauntlet player pool. By removing the mode globally, DICE and EA applied a blanket rule that heavily penalised healthy regional servers just because other global regions were flattening the average data metrics.
Let's call this what it really is: Forced Playlist Migration.
Gauntlet was a masterpiece of tactical, round-based, objective-driven squad play. It was a pure Battlefield experience that rewarded positioning and true coordination. But because it was a pure tactical mode, it didn't push the flashing cosmetics, battle passes, and monetization mechanics that formats like Battle Royale inherently rely on. Gauntlet was getting immense love from the community, and instead of celebrating that success, corporate leadership viewed it as a threat that was cannibalizing the player base of the modes that actually make them the most money. So, they eliminated it to force us into a corner.
The immediate 18.3 percent player drop over a 24-hour period following the update proves that this gamble completely backfired. Players didn't migrate; they just shut the game off.
If the developers actually cared about resolving matchmaking efficiency without alienating their most loyal players, they could have easily implemented common-sense structural solutions instead of completely deleting the mode:
- Move Gauntlet Behind the Paid Wall: Traditional multiplayer modes like Conquest and Escalation are Battlefield’s paid bread-and-butter. If Gauntlet being free-to-play was pulling too many people away from monetized live-service modes, make it a premium, permanent mode exclusive to the full paid game. The dedicated Gauntlet community would gladly purchase the full game package just to keep playing the mode they love, giving EA their premium sales win while respecting the community.
- Optimize Lobby Configurations Instead of Canceling: If filling an 8-squad lobby was causing queue issues in smaller global regions, the solution was optimization, not elimination. Simply shrink the scale to Trios or limit the total lobby size to 4 or 5 squads. This would have condensed the player pool perfectly, slashed queue times in struggling regions, and kept the exact same tactical, round-based objective depth alive.
Instead of adapting, it feels like we got hit with rigid corporate roadmaps and an unwillingness to admit that a smaller, tactical mode was outperforming their heavily marketed Battle Royale plans.
The numbers show that a massive chunk of the community is choosing to walk away rather than play Rapid Royale. Bring back Gauntlet, optimize the lobby mechanics, and stop trying to force players into modes they don't want to play.
We love BF6 and want to remain players of this incredible game don’t throw away loyal players. 🖤
