In general I consider tanks staying far away like that as a sign that the current tanks are very weak in direct combat up close.
IRL tanks are something the infantry hides behind and not something that hides behind infantry.

Not sure if they are weak, the game just allows a team to over pick on engineers and still win the game.
Just as an extreme example, BF2 closed weapon engineer only allowed to use terrible shotguns, try winning a game with 90% engineer pick rate in BF2.
Dice claimed class pick rate was identical open vs closed, but not when you then give engineers 5 rockets upon spawn. Plus this was tested on non typical BF maps.
Closed weapon system is a tool to balance classes, too few engineers and you lose against the vehicles too many and you lose the infantry battles, currently you can be 90% engineer and it’ll work just fine.
Anyway the weapon system won’t change anymore but they can tweak engineer to be more in-line with the other classes. Longer reload on rockets, slower speed, etc. I mean engineers don’t even run AA because RPG just does it all, meaning more engineers that run RPG and can destroy tanks.
Nearly T1 on MBT and IFV and vehicles are strong and fun even when playing aggressive, but purely out of principle when a class in Battlefield is picked as much as engineer there are major flaws in the design.
