Computer Lockup

I'm reposting this here because when I posted in the bugs forum, I got no response. It only seems to have been happening over the last several days where I typically cannot get through a match without my laptop getting really hot and the game completely locking up. I end up having to reboot. I have tried turning off DLSS and lowering the graphics settings and still happens. No other game seems to do this, and I was able to play BF6 before with no issues on close to max settings. My system settings are: ASUS Tuf Gaming A17 FA707XV laptop with an AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS w/ Radeon 740M Graphics and an NVIDIA GeForce 4060 Laptop GPU and 32 GB of RAM. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I am enjoying playing the game and no longer can seem to do so.

  • Have you run the 'chkdsk' command in Command Prompt? If not, I would recommend doing so as a first step in the troubleshooting process.

    Example syntax: chkdsk C: /F

    USAGE: chkdsk /?

Various issues can cause a black screen and freeze, such as RAM overflow when sharing with other software, faulty RAM, compatibility issues, graphics card problems, and software conflicts and bugs. These issues can lead to crashes or a complete system freeze, resulting in a black screen. Historically, RAM issues are a notable cause. If the RAM addressing is not functioning properly with active software, including drivers and background processes, it may cause the computer to freeze or display a black screen. On the other hand, it's interesting that I haven't experienced any issues on my PC, despite it having lower-spec hardware than many other BF6 players.

    Helpful troubleshooting utilities:

    ・RAMMap.exe (x64 and x32) – a free physical memory analyser from Sysinternals
    ・Task Manager – implemented in Windows 10 and 11.

Thank you for the response. I tried the chkdsk method and initially it seemed to fix the problem but towards the end of the match, my computer locked up again. It is so weird to me how the game ran perfectly for me for months, then I started having this issue after the Ice Lock update, but when I finally got a video card driver update, it seemed to fix the issue. About a month or so later, there was another update for drivers, and even before I updated them, it started freezing again. No other games, even more graphic intensive ones seem to cause any issues for me.

    Hello,

First of all, please accept my sincere apology for the delay in replying to your message — I truly appreciate your patience and understanding.

Thanks also to the BF6 forum moderator for kindly reminding me about your new subscription.

Regarding your ASUS TUF Gaming A17 FA707XV laptop: unlike my ASUS TUF Gaming B550-Plus desktop — which features a CMOS Clear Header (CLRTC) pin and a Flashback Button on the motherboard for hardware troubleshooting — laptops generally offer more limited hardware reset options. Please keep this in mind when attempting any hardware-level troubleshooting.

With that in mind, the best immediate focus is software-level troubleshooting and consulting any available game patches or official updates from the developers, as these often address freezing and performance issues that players report.

Below are some friendly, practical suggestions you can try. Before starting, please read your laptop’s manual carefully and make sure you understand each step.

    Basic Workarounds to Try First

    Refresh Rates & Display Settings

    - Try lowering your refresh rate to 120 Hz or less instead of 144 Hz. Some GPUs or laptops behave oddly when running high refresh rates under heavy game rendering.
    - GPU Drivers — Try Different Versions

Although you’ve updated your driver once, it’s worth testing both the latest and a slightly older stable version. Some users with TUF laptops have reported freezes that improved after rolling back drivers. A clean driver removal using Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) in Safe Mode, followed by a fresh install (from NVIDIA’s site rather than just ASUS) can help.

    Windows & System Drivers

    - Make sure Windows Update is fully completed, including optional driver updates.
    - Chipset and system drivers sometimes impact game stability, so a clean reinstall there can help.
    - If BitLocker is enabled, consider suspending it during driver swaps or BIOS changes to avoid conflicts.
    - Also consider removing software that Battlefield 6 doesn’t interact well with (e.g., advanced system monitoring tools like Process Monitor).

    Power & Performance Settings

Use a balanced/performance Windows power profile and set maximum processor state to 99% — this can reduce unusual throttling behaviors under load. Ensure the laptop is plugged in and using an ASUS performance power plan if available.

    Battlefield 6 Specific Fixes

Some community-reported tweaks that have helped others include:

    - Adjusting Windows Exploit Protection for bf6.exe and anti-cheat processes.
    - Verifying game files and reinstalling DirectX / Visual C++ redistributables.
    - Forcing DX11 instead of DX12 if the option exists.
    - Shorter play sessions between restarts (community users sometimes see less freezing with more frequent restarts).
    - In Windows Defender Firewall, check that TCP/UDP ports used by BF6 are correctly allowed if your system auto-changes them.

    Armoury Crate / ASUS Utilities

Some players have found that uninstalling Armoury Crate and related ASUS background applications — which sometimes conflict with power and CPU/GPU profiles — reduces freezing. If you remove them, reinstall only essential components like GHelper for fan/power control if needed.

    Safe Mode / Clean Boot

    - Boot into Safe Mode to check for system-wide issues (freezing shouldn’t happen there).
    - Perform a Clean Boot by disabling all non-Microsoft startup services to rule out software conflicts.

    Hardware Health

Monitor CPU/GPU temperatures — thermal throttling under long sessions can feel like freezes. Also ensure vents and fans are clean and unobstructed.

Next Phase: BIOS and System Updates

If you haven’t already, check ASUS’s support site for BIOS and essential driver updates.

Enter the BIOS and confirm settings are at defaults if they’ve been changed.
Important: Unless a BIOS setting is known to help, leave defaults as they are rather than manually changing values.

If needed, use Windows Recovery Options (with data backed up) to restore or refresh your system — make sure the laptop is plugged in throughout.

Settings → System → Recovery → choose the appropriate recovery action.

If your BIOS is up-to-date and within recent versions, you can leave defaults alone. Some users have found that older driver/firmware combo issues relate to freezing, so trying both updated and slightly older driver versions can be insightful.

    Last Resort

If all else fails, resetting the system to factory defaults can sometimes clear persistent, hard-to-pin down issues.

I hope these suggestions help. If you have further questions or need clarification on any step, I’m happy to assist.

Wishing you smooth performance and enjoyable gaming! 🎮✨
