Further update - cleared space on my console to have 100+ gigs available (previously had approx 50 available), and also rebuilt the database using PS5 safe mode - this appears to have potentially done something, I was able to play for 3-4 hours last night with no hard crash, in addition I switched to performance mode in the games settings.
A previous person also reported doing a few things and among them was deleting old games so I have suspicion that it is related to storage space - not really sure if this would even be a possibility.
