Battlefield 1 graphics problems

A while back when i would launch battlefield 1 in full screen it would be all shaky and blurry, i managed to pin it down to the fact that the game only runs on 59 Hz and there is no 60 Hz setting, i had the same issue with rainbow six but i changed it to 60 Hz which fixed it. the only thing i cant understand is that it used to work fine and this issue only happened recently, even resetting my PC didn't help. It works fine on windowed or border-less but i get bad FPS on either of those, switching to 1920x1080 50 Hz also fixes it but again yields bad FPS. Anyone have any idea how to fix it? thanks in advance.

  • @ZeHindenBurg If not tried yet give this a go...

Edit....thinking on this more what is your video card ? I may be able to help you pull out more FPS :]

    Disable Origin in game:
In Origin - Application settings - Origin in Game - disable Origin in game

Origin Cloud Storage turn it off
    Origin, settings, General

If  this fails to fix it then try this...

    C:\Users\your PC Name\Documents\Battlefield 1

BF1 folder in my documents holds game configs and screen shots even if BF1 is installed on different drive. When you uninstall BF4 it does NOT remove this folder. So when you install the game again you can still have the same issues. Even if its not a new install it is still worth trying as the game cfg could be mucked up.

1- Go to my Documents and remove BF4 folder place it on your Desktop for now.
2- Be warned you do have to set up your in game settings again.
    3-Repair BF1
4- When done go test your game. If it fails reboot your PC and run repair game again and test BF1

If this fails to fix it then I would try this but do the steps as I have them posted please to be sure it is done correct as your issue could be due to old drivers on your PC so it can't hurt to try this...

Copy and past all of this to note pad and put it on your desktop...

When the time comes to install the video card driver you will be picking advanced you will only install two things from it for Nvidia cards 1- Graphics Driver 2- PhysX System and for AMD cards only check off display driver and catalyst control center. As well as check off CLEAN install

This is how you do a clean graphic driver clean install.........

Start by downloading your graphic card drivers from here,

    AMD; http://support.amd.com/en-us/download
    NVidia; http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

Download the one you have and save it on desktop, you are going to need it!

It is very normal for windows to install a video card driver on you this is why you must pick advanced then clean install when you get to the part to install the new video card driver. See part 2 step 2

1- press windows button,NOTE>>> Or just go to device manger and skip to step 5

    2- right click my computer,

3- press property’s, you will get a new window here.

4- in the new window click device manger on your left side of the screen, you will get another new window here,

5- you will see in the latest window a list of devices you have in your computer, click on the arrow beside Display driver and a small fall down menu will show you what kind of graphic card you have.

6- left click on your (graphic card name) so it’s highlighted in blue,

7- right click (graphic card name) and press property’s, you will get a new small window here,

8- in the new small window click on Drivers, you will see the name between the tabs,

9- in the driver menu click on uninstall, you will now get a really small window that ask you if you’re really sure that you want to uninstall you’re graphic card drivers,

    10- click ok, Reboot PC

    Part 2.....

1- after you have started up/ rebooted your computer start the new video card driver install

2- follow the instructions of your graphic card installer, Pick Custom / Advanced and only check off for Nvidia 1- Graphics Driver and PhysX System as well as check off clean install

2- for AMD card only check off display driver and catalyst control center as well as check off clean install

3- when you have Installed your new graphic card drivers restart

    4- you’re done. Test BF1

I did all the steps as described, starting with Origin in game which was already turned off and then cloud save which didn't change anything either. From there i removed the battlefield 1 folder and repaired the game launched it set it up and even restarted the computer and repaired it again which didn't help.

I then proceeded to do a clean installation of the graphics drivers as you had described restarted it and tried taking the file out again and repairing the game which still did nothing, Overall in full screen it still has the blurry shake even after trying everything.

Under the same settings in Battlefield 4 the game doesn't have the issue that battlefield 1 does, both running at 1920x1080 with the 59 Hz option.

In case you'd still like to know I'm using an Asus Strix GTX 960 4GB graphics card.

  • @ZeHindenBurg Ok let's look at settings then not sure it will help but worth trying ...

First step open Nvidia Control panel under 3D settings go to Adjust image settings with preview

Pick use my preference and set it to performance and hit apply.

Next go to Manage 3D settings, Program settings tab and add BF1

Once BF1 is added in Program settings tab make sure all this is in place if your card has all the settings ..

    Ambient occlusion- not supported
Anisotropic filtering- use global settings off
Antialiasing - FXAA - not supported
Antialiasing- Gamma correction- use global settings on
Antialiasing-Mode - use global settings off
Antialiasing- setting - use global settings none
Antialiasing- Transparency - use global settings off
CUDA- GPU's - use global settings ALL
Maximum pre-rendered frames - Use the 3D application setting
Multi display /mixed GPU acceleration- set to what your display is
Power management mode- Prefer Maximum Performance
Shader Cache- use global settings on
Texture filtering - Anisotropic sample Opti.... - use global settings on
Texture filtering- Negative LOD bias - use global setting Allow
Texture filtering - Quality - use global setting Quality
Texture filtering - Trilinear optimization - use global settings on
Thread optimization - use global setting Auto
Triple buffering - use global settings off
Vetical Sync - use global settings off
Virtual Reality pre-rendered frames - use global settings 1

Below is from BF4 but check in BF1 video settings ingame and change what you can to this. Sadly I am not by my game rig so I can't go look in my BF1 game this second for you  but BF1 should have some or all of this in video.

In game video settings right side set to custom and set everything to medium or low but last three turn them off ....

    1-antialiasing deferred off
    2-antialiasing post off
    3-ambient occlusion off

on left side be sure vertical sync is off and under video... resolution scale to under 100 like 80 or 90 will up your FPS

All the settings were the same as you described in Nvidia Control panel. I went in and changed the graphics settings in game and still nothing fixed it.

I play tested the game to see what its like beyond the menu screen and the whole game just has a fuzzy look to it, without V-sync i get screen tearing and it just doesnt run much better on border-less, other then the fact that it removes the fuzzy look.

  • @ZeHindenBurg For testing and this could be your issue as cables do go bad over time and due to BF1 is a hog to run it will show up in this game before others. So change the DP cable / what kind you use from your screen to your PC and see if this will fix it for you.

Something rather bizarre, i changed my HDMI cable for another one i had laying around and the game runs clear and fine now but when i go to adjust any setting, weather it be brightness or graphic levels, it blacks out for a second and then reappears with the text confirming if id like to change the settings and then the fuzzy image is back.

Seems GeForce Experience has it optimized and I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it working now but like I said I cant touch my settings or else it reverts back.

Seems Geforce Experience helps to a degree, after i uninstalled it the game ran fine for awhile and then reverted back the blurry screen. i rebooted the PC reinstalled GeForce Experience optimized the game it was fine again.

Like i said though i cant touch any of the in-game video settings or else it reverts back to the blurry screen.

  • @ZeHindenBurg It sounds like a settings overlap issue some place or a driver issue maybe off chance windows issue. You did a clean install of the video card driver and it did nothing. In game and in geforce experience  is anything set to Ultra ? For testing I would remove the ultra in both and see what it does if anything. I never use programs like this as they make me nuts and I  can pull more out of my video card without it. So I am not any help on the geforce experience at all as the few times it touched my PC's I smashed my head on my desk lol.

Any chance you keep a backup copy of your windows OS on a external drive? No worries if you do not off chance but lets test for missing or corrupt windows Dll files.

Test your windows for errors as a clean windows install does not always make a stable windows.

NOTE: Running SFC does not guarantee the crash will not happen, but it will ensure it is not because a windows Dll or file is corrupted in windows.

This works in all windows O/S vista Win7, Win8 , Win8.1 and win 10 windows system file checker :] Copy and past this to note pad and put it on your desktop. As open programs can give you errors when you run this.

sfc /scannow, ever hear of it if not your going to love this, it will inspect all the important windows files as well as the windows DLL files. If windows system file checker finds any issues with the windows files and windows DLL files it will replace them / try to fix them. This little tool as well as the event viewer on a PC saved me and fully helped me fix my BF4 issues as well as saved me many a format since I found it. This is the best toy they ever put in windows :womanvery-happy:

-For win7 go to start/ bottom left screen / windows globe .. Right click in search type cmd and right click cmd pick run as administrator.
-For win 8.1 right mouse click start bottom left of screen / windows box and pick command prompt administrator.

1-Open administrator command prompt and close web pages and programs like Origin, Steam etc.

2-Type or copy and paste in sfc /scannow and hit enter, This takes 5 min to 15 min SSD vs HD

3-This can go one of a few ways ..... no errors ... it fixed some errors ..... could not fix all errors...... does not finish checking and errors out ....... and the last one could not fix errors at all :/

4-After its done REBOOT PC and Run sfc /scannow again even if you had no errors the first time or had errors, could not fix run sfc /scannow again and when its done a second time reboot. You need to do this a and get no errors 2 x in a row ...

5-So if you ran it 2x and no errors your safe you can stop. If you had errors first time but not the second then run sfc /scannow again and when its done reboot. You need to get could not find any errors 2 x to be safe. If it still finds errors try and run it a few more times until it finds no errors 2x AND ALWAYS REBOOT BETWEEN RUNNING sfc /scannow

6-If you get a message indicating that it can not be repaired and you ran sfc /scannow more then 3x in a row on win vista or 7 mm you need a format or try repair win 7 :/ But after format or repair and all updates are done run sfc /scannow to make sure your windows is stable same deal 2x error free reboot between them.

NOTE-If your O/S is Win8 or Win 8,1 or win10 then you can run the next few command lines in administrator command prompt. Sadly this does not work for win vista or 7 :/ Note: After you run each command line Reboot PC.

This next part of windows scans is only for windows 8 & windows 8.1 and win 10

Reboot PC after you run each command line and close programs and web pages.

And same deal as above run command prompt administrator.

1-This command line will scan the health of your PC:
    dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth

2-This command line will restore the health of your PC and you don't lose anything on your PC :
    dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Note: If you get errors with the two command lines above and it cant be fixed with second command line and if you are on windows 8.1. Then use third command line but be warned it could take up to two hrs to fix your PC but it will save you a format. I had a friend test this on a PC with errors when it could not be fixed with second command line. :womanvery-happy:

This next part of windows scans is only for windows 8.1 and win 10

And same deal as above run command prompt administrator.

1-If restore heath gave you errors then you can always try this command line:

    dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

2-If you get Error 0x800F081F with the restore health scan then run this command line. After you reboot your PC then run third command line to be sure your windows is fully stable.

    Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /AnalyzeComponentStore
