Battlefield 3 crashes when clicking video settings in game

Battlefield 3 crashes when clicking video settings in game - every time!! Reinstalled the game and the same. Drivers are most recent. Did not happen on windows 7. Upgraded to 10 and everytime it crashes.

  • I figured it out. I use a Sony 4K TV as my main screen. I unplugged the HDMI for that and had my Dell monitor (connected to Display Port) set up as my main screen. Only then was I able to get into the Video settings without crashing, set it to "windowed" like I wanted and then connected back to my Sony TV.

Weird...why would be connected to a TV cause video options to crash the game.

  • Hi
I have found a solution to this issue today. Please, PROCEED AT OWN RISK. Please read carefully before making a change.

    Spoiler
You will need to know what your native desktop resolution is.                        -->                        Our EXAMPLE will be 1024x768

    Using notepad++, Open the "PROF_SAVE_Profile" file found in "C:\Users\(your user profile)\Documents\Battlefield 3\settings"

Go to lines 28.29 and 30.. They will look like this.

    GstRender.ResolutionHeight
    GstRender.ResolutionHertz
    GstRender.ResolutionWidth

    Following our Example above, Change:

    GstRender.ResolutionHeight  1024
    GstRender.ResolutionHertz 24
    GstRender.ResolutionWidth 768

This will be different for each of you, as you will all likely have a different resolution. After you have completed the edit, save the file.

You should now be able to go into video settings ingame without the application crashing.

    Alternative method:

Cut the files in the folder "C:\Users\(your user profile)\Documents\Battlefield 3\settings\" and place them in a different location for backup. An example would be a new folder on the desktop.

Once booting the game it will create new files and setting appropriate to the device the game is running on. HOWEVER YOU WILL LOSE ALL SAVED GAME PROGRESS AND PERSONALIZATION LIKE KEY BINDS.

  • I myself have this problem also and came to be dissapointed by you. That didn't help or answer the person's question. You ignored them and only engaged to someone else with an unrelated workaround.

Can you actually try to help or fix this issue?

Fitting for what I'd expect from EAs support people I guess.

  • Not a work around if you don't have another monitor. How about a  fix so I can use my paid for content?

That is pretty weird. I don't think I've ever encountered that before. I'm glad to hear that you were able to figure out a workaround. 👍

    Hey @vice350z

Were you able to try setting up a Clean Boot? Are you still running into the same issues when you're trying to open up the video settings?

    Hey there.

Apologies for the late reply on this.

What happens if you try setting up a Clean Boot on your PC before you launch the game? For more information on how to set one up check out the EA Help website. Let me know if you're still running into the same issue when you're trying to change your video settings.

    Thanks!

Same thing here. GTX 1080, Win 10...all drivers updated. I even plugged DP and additional HDMI from the card...still crashes when I go to VIDEO in options. Holy annoying. All i want to do is change to windowed. But no reply to the OP's post in a month gives me little faith about solving thing.
