Battlefield3/4 Linux(Ubuntu) support.

I'd just like to ask about Linux(Preferably Ubuntu support as it's the distro that other game platforms use) support for Battlefield3/4.

I know that a re-write from DX11 would be a lot of work, however PS4 uses OpenGL, meaning that Frostbite3 would be written in OpenGL, meaning a port would be easier than before?

I also know that OpenGL benchmarks at a lot higher than DX11.

Linux gaming is a rising market, and I know that it'd be a gamble, however there will be support for it from the community.

  • I don't think there's many in here that actually can influence Dice's + EA's choice on the matter as this is a community driven help forum. That being said, I agree that a Linux version would be cool, I however still think there's some time before we'll begin, to often see, AAA graphic intensive titles in that segment.

While OpenGL, in at least Valve's graphic engines, have scored higher than DX11, DirectX still has alot of advantages. The API is cleaner and is easier to learn, this means it's still a bit easier to code games for DX11.

In other words, I hope for some more OpenGL love too 🙂 - but if you want a real chance for Dice/EA to notice your plea, then you should probably write your suggestion on Battlelog 🙂

  • I discovered a server which not only runs under linux but the admin was playing under linux, when asked how he did this he didn't respond but apparently its possible, I wished it was, I would not run windows at all then, for now I dual boot windows 10/Ubuntu
