codes for bf3

hi, i brought a pre-owned copy of battlefield3 and was told i needed a code for the online multiplayer which was free if i got it on the ea site, where do we get it and why do we actually need a code?? if we buy the game surely we should just be able too get on with playing instead of all this pullava.
