Solved

packet loss

So I got Battlefield 4 for the PS4 around 3 weeks ago. I didn't have the greatest connection (we have internet, and a router, which is positioned in my room, where I play, with 3-4 pc's on it, 4 phones, and a playstation) but got an internet cable to connect my PS4 to the router in my room (which directs our main internet, copies it, strenghtens it and sends it away again), and my lag was fine. However, on my ps4 with the internet test I get around 30 MB download speed, while in my pc I get 40, also wired. Okay, that's fine, but I keep getting the "high latency variation" icon on the right side of the screen while playing. So I ran the connection test in the game itself, and I got 39ms ping, 0 packet loss in 0 packet loss out, MOST of the time. Until right now, I got like 0.68 packet loss out. So I'm wondering

1. What does this icon mean?

2. How can I get it gone?

3. What is the packet loss thing?

4. Is it bad?

5. Can I fix it?

Thanks already everyone.

  • Well, Hello at first.

I can tell you, and explain you your problem, give you a few tips.

But!, I do not guarantee you that it'll solve your problem.

First of all, packet loss, is simply loss of data,

when you send a ping request to the server, it sends data, and packet loss is when the part of the data is not reaching the server.

usually, it caused by wireless connection, but you said you got your connection wired.

Few things I can suggest you, first of all, try rebooting your router.

try not overloading it with request, As you said, you got many devices using it at once, and when you are using data,

the amount of transfer is unlimited (in most cases) but the size of the transfer at once is what limited, (Usually thats the deal with every home internet connection)

if you are using too many, it may get limited and slow itself down, which will causes the lags aka packet loss.

other thing, sometimes wires can make a little problems, and I can suggest you changing the wires, with self experience, it'll make some effect.

more one thing, your router may be not that high-end, and may cause problems. stuff never last for ever..

    back to the game..

When you see the packet loss icon, it means its missing some data from you.

when this happens you'll experience "rubber banding", what you'll see is your character will start jumping from point to point,

and it'll start to annoy you, also it may occur with other players, (usually more than just one guy if the problem is with you)

you may also not exactly feel rubber banding, but feel uncomfortable gaming, you'll know what I mean when you'll experience this.

few solutions, you can try changing server as for many reasons thats the server's fault,

also you can try playing server with lower thick rate.

    Thats it.

again I just give you opinions and basic understanding,

    Hope I helped you 🙂

First of all, THANK YOU for your answer. You cleared many things up for me, so... thanks alot 🙂

At the end of your post you said "play with lower thick rate", what does this mean, and how do I do it?

    I appreciate your answer 🙂

  • I'm not a console player, but in the PC, you can choose it as a filter and choose between 30,60,120,144 tick rate, and trying with a smaller one, it'll cause a worse netcode.

for example you may get damage of hits like once or twice, when the enemy actually shot you more than once, and you'll receive it as one damage large damage.

if it doesn't bother you much, thats not a problem.

(^ the example above is about a poor tick rate, and may happen mostly with server issues)

also you might check the server names, sometimes they write their tick rate on the server's name.
