Play BF4 on SSD and Install DLC on HDD?

Hey guys, was just wondering if I could install BF4 on my SSD and then install all the DLC on my HDD and still play the maps? Is it possible just to hardlink the files?

Cheers

  • Hi BluePantss, No if you could pull it off it would only give you errors. I keep origin and my origin games all on my F drive/ SSD. What windows are you on as I could if you want link you a page to make more room on the SSD.

EDIT...The one thing I would never do  is turn off page file lol I have 32 gigs of ram and when I was testing with BF4 Stopped working page file off makes this error in BF4. So if you use this page to make more room on your SSD DO NOT turn off page file!

Use a Junction Point (or Soft Link) is the only way I know to split Origin Games folders up as Origin only accepts 1 directory in the settings.

Cut and paste the Update folder (or each individual Xpac folder) into the place you want them.

    Run CMD as admin.

    mklink /j Link_path Target_path

Link_path = where you want windows to link to (Shortcut / Link / Fake)

Target_path =  where you actually put the data

    example

    mklink /j  C:\Program Files (x86)Origin Games\Battlefield 4\Update Z:\BF4 Files

This will make a folder that has a shortcut icon on it.  It will fail if the place you try to make that link already has a folder by the same name (why you need to cut and paste first).

** I should mention I have never specifically done it for this purpose... but I've used plenty of Junctions for things very similar just not for this game.

WootCandy, I hope you're still active because I don't really understand how to put in the commands in it at all.

So what I did is I moved the Xpack folder DLC's to my seperate E: drive and placed it in E:\Program Files HDD\Origin Games\Battlefield 4\Update

    So in the E: update folder I have the following folders: Xpack0, Xpack1, Xpack2, Xpack3, Xpack4

    Original DLC location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Battlefield 4\Update

What would the correct command be for this one? I'm getting a syntax error with my current attempt.

If you are still reading this. I was able to split my DLCs with WootCandy's method. This is what i did (I will modify commands to suit you)

    1. Terminate the bf4 process

    2. Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Battlefield 4

    3. Rename the file that is named update to update- (You will need this later)

    4. Open CMD as an administrator

    5. Type the following command: mklink /j  "C:\Program Files (x86)Origin Games\Battlefield 4\Update" "E:\Program Files HDD\Origin Games\Battlefield 4\Update"

This command will make a link so when origin looks for the update folder, it will be redirected.

    6. Get the contents out of Update- and put them in your E:\Program Files HDD\Origin Games\Battlefield 4\Update

You should be ready to go.

Quick tip for command prompt. When you had a syntax error, you needed to put quotation marks around the path, it thought you had the spaces as different paths and stuff.
