I second the above notions. Watch out for planes that are already damaged. I happened to get one plane destroyed when I didn't even focus on it. I was playing Conquest on Emperor's Edge as Support with the Lewis gun - the huge magazine size really helped there, finished off a bomber with it.

Starting off with an AA is probably also a great option, then shooting it down with the rifle in the end.
