Server Shutdown Complaint - Xbox 360

Dear EA Games

I am writing to express my disappointment with the recent announcement of the shutdown of Bad Company 1 & 2 and Battlefield 1943. As a long-time player and supporter of the games. I am extremely frustrated that myself and many fellow gamers are going to loss access to the server.

The Battlefield Bad Company 2 online service has been a major source of enjoyment for me and many other players. We have invested countless hours in the game, building relationships with other players, and mastering the gameplay. The shutdown of the server has left us all feeling saddened and a little betrayed, especially as some of us play on the Xbox 360. I love the late nights on Bad Company 2, that game for me holds a special place in my heart, even now all these years. The gaming experiences and community is lovely. The game still holds it self as one of the best till this day.

I understand that server maintenance and updates are necessary for the health and longevity of the game, but the complete shutdown of the server is feel is a little over kill.

I urge the company to retract the game server shutdown announcement as soon as possible or provide a suitable alternative solution for players who have invested time and money into the games.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

Ryan Christian

  • December 8th will truly be a dark day in gaming history, and my life. I've contacted EA so many times since March in an attempt to get them to revert this decision, or give us server hosting tools. I even tried tweeting at Marcus Lehto, the "Game Director" for Battlefield, I got no response.

    1. I said: "@game_fabricator (1/4) As a devoted Bad Company 2 player, EA's decision to close the PC Servers is heartbreaking. I'm begging for your support to help preserve this classic. Please, use your power to advocate for something that gives us recourse. Don't make this game abandonware.

    2. (2/4) Look at the praise 343 has received for their continued support of Halo, a franchise you played a massive role in. Look at the all the positive PR and praise @Activision had just a couple months ago when they updated older Call of Duty games. EA can do the right thing here.

    3. (3/4) By permanently removing an official options for online Multiplayer... The primary selling point of the game will be permanently gone. We just never get to play online again? Or we have to to use potentially unsafe 3rd party tools. Please, let us host our own servers.

    4. (4/4) Providing an official solution for online play will allow Bad Company 2 to continue its legacy. EA should extend the server hosting rights from 2010 to licensed owners, give us the tools, please. It'll prompt additional sales, people will praise EA, we all win. Please."

I've sent many  Support Tickets, one recent attempt was very similar to what I said to Mr. Lehto:

    • "I am writing to you as a passionate and dedicated player of Battlefield: Bad Company 2, a game that holds a special place in the hearts of many gamers, as you know. I have been a loyal supporter of EA's products for years, and I deeply appreciate the incredible experiences your games have provided. However, I must express my profound disappointment and concern regarding the March 2023 announcement that EA plans to close the servers for several games, in particular Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

I understand that the player base for Bad Company 2 has dwindled over the years, but it remains a cherished gem for those of us who still cherish it. Many of us would love to continue playing this remarkable game online, even if it's with a smaller group of fellow enthusiasts. This decision has left me and many other dedicated players feeling disheartened and dismayed. Bad Company 2 has not only been a source of endless enjoyment but has also fostered a strong sense of community among its players. I've contacted EA through several different channels about this and so far have never received a satisfactory response. In my opinion, there are only two proper courses EA can take here. Either not closing the servers at all, or providing the server hosting tools that server hosting partners have had for years, to users.

I implore EA to extend the ability to host servers from trusted server hosting partners as it was in 2010. You could even require verification of ownership and give these tools to licensed owners of the game. This move would not only preserve the game for dedicated players like myself but also demonstrate EA's commitment to its gaming communities and its willingness to support older titles. The positive PR and goodwill generated by such an action cannot be overstated. As evidenced by Activision's recent efforts to update and patch older titles in their Call of Duty franchise, supporting legacy games has the potential to bring back lapsed players, create positive buzz, and ensure that these beloved titles continue to thrive.

There's no way EA didn't take notice of Activision's massive PR win in doing this with their older games. I firmly believe that allowing licensed owners of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 to host their own servers would be a win-win situation for both EA and the passionate player base. It would show that EA values its community and is willing to go the extra mile to keep its games alive. Moreover, it would allow us to continue enjoying this timeless classic on our terms, while also potentially attracting new players to the game. Multiplayer is the primary selling point of Battlefield games, you can prolong the sales of this amazing game, however minimal. You're giving people who love this game or COULD love this game absolutely no recourse for playing online Multiplayer ever again.

As of now, you're leaving people who love your games with absolutely no recourse at all for enjoying them in the future. You're breaking the hearts of some of your most dedicated, caring players. You're forcing us to turn to 3rd party solutions for creating masterservers or hosting servers instead of maintaining this game or allowing us to do it with officially provided tools. I kindly beg that you bring this plea to the attention of the decision-makers at EA and consider the positive impact that such a move could have on the community and the gaming industry as a whole, before it's too late.

This is not just my personal request, but the collective voice of dedicated Battlefield: Bad Company 2 players who share my sentiment. There has even been an online petition to revert or alter this decision. I remain hopeful that EA will legitimately consider this request and make a decision, and the full implications of the current decision... and do the right thing, please."

EA has never given a satisfactory response. I've opened 10+ Support Tickets and I honestly can't tell if the responses are AI or automatically generated or not.

To not give us the ability to host our own servers after taking the masterserver down is ridiculous and disgusting. It's truly a loss for gaming and game preservation. I've meant to play a lot more ever since the announcement and I'm going to play as much as I can in this last month. What a heartbreaking loss. EA doesn't care about the love we have for this game apparently, they bastardized it in 2042 and didn't do it justice. But it will always live through videos, our memories, and maybe 3rd party projects to allow server hosting? I have no idea.

It's just a shame that EA is taking it away from us, especially on PC. Server Hosting Tools exist , [2], [3], they just won't give them to us. This old EuroGamer article talked about how apparently DICE claimed that they weren't even profiting from this System of only allowing Server Hosting through Official Partners.

  • I can't believe they did this. Bad Company 2 was the game that made their franchise popular and they just spit in the face of their consumers. What if someone with a PS3 or xbox360 doesn't own a PC. This was the last great game to hold onto when owning a PS3 or 360. Not like it would have cost them a fortune to maintain the servers either. Who made this decision?

  • Honestly I'm not much for boycotting or holding grudges.... but what a trash move by EA execs. What little skin off their back would it be to, at the very least, work with the community of dedicated players to create a solution that works for everyone? Entitled Arts pulling moves like this and really illustrating their disconnect from their core audience. I know a lot of people have complained about EA in the last decade, and I was always quick to give them the benefit of the doubt. But I get it now- and I'm willing to sacrifice my love of Star Wars over this. I'm boycotting EA. And I'm holding a grudge.

  • I don't know why you bothered. Maybe if you were an investor, they would have listened. EA has shown over the years that they do not care about player feedback. Thank God we have third party servers, at least.
