@RicketySprockets I've found that tanks in BFV are most effective when they stick with their team (not always possible of course), as they can go down quickly if the tanker tries to go it alone.
Also in tank-on-tank combat try to stay at an angle to the enemy - if weak spots are being hit then chances are high that you'll lose. It can be worth changing to the anti-tank shells too, if they've been unlocked in the specialisms.
