Cannot Change resolution back to natural IN C&C GeneralsZero hour

So I was having some trouble with the game launching (I should clarify is Zero Hour, not just generals), it would start but kick me out and and go back it and I get like a second of audio and it kicks me out again, ad infitium.  founds likes of posts, but the sticky setting up the options.ini and setting the properties to 640x480 finally seemed to fix it.  then I, like an idiot, tried changing the resolution again, thinking I should just be able to change it back.  Now its kicking me out again, and nothing I can try (resetting the properties, turning them off and resetting them, changing the resolution in the options to the 1024 x 786 or 640x480, uninstall, reinstall, recreate the options, either as indicated in the sticky, or as I found in another thread, and any combinations of these)).  this is one of my all time favorite games and I would like to play it on my new computer, but this is really frustrating me.  Any new ideas.  Maybe I need to delete everything, uninstall, restart and start over?

A lot of the games have been upgraded with community-created unofficial patches that fix a lot of their bugs and compatibility problems. You can find them here:

    Command & Conquer 1:

    Red Alert 1:

    Tiberian Sun:

    Red Alert 2:

    • I advise installing the CnCNet online play installer for RA2/YR. Even if you're not interested in online play, it comes with a bunch of automatic fixes. It should automatically take care of the "black screen on startup" issue, and has a configuration tool that allows further tweaking of the game's settings.

    Generals:

    • GenTool seems to be the main patch for Generals these days. The website is kind of vague on what it does besides restoring multiplayer and adding anti-cheat, but I heard it does a lot to make it work better on modern OSes too.
    • If you have issues with DirectX errors popping up, find and delete the file "dbghelp.dll" in the game's install folder.

    Renegade:

  • I forgot to mention I installed gentool as well and it isn't helping.  But thank you!
