C&C problems

I followed the instructions on what to do to get C&C RA2 YR working but all it says when I click on the game is :error. unable to set the video mode: and it didn't do that before...

I even have problems starting C&C RA3. I get an error saying that I need a higher directx and 9 is the minimum. but I am running the latest directx which I think is either 11 or 12. I have a brand new 2020 laptop and I am running windows 10. any help will be greatly appreciated. thanks!

  • @Rafael274 Thank you for following my instructions to make a new topic 🙂 To fix the DirectX 9 error you have to actually install DirectX 9 (as DX 10-12 will be automatically installed but DX9 not). Follow these instructions: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Command_%26_Conquer:_Generals#DirectX_8.1_error_.28Windows.29 (intructions can also be applied to many other CNC games.) If that doesn't fix that error: look for "dbghelp.dll" at the installation directory and delete it.

    I have not much experience with RA2/YR, but by googeling I found these possible solutions which many users reported as working. Can you try them and report to me if it fixes your problems? (I would try solution 2 and 3 first and if those didn't work, then try solution 1):

    "There are only 3 reasons for this error:

    Your windows runs in 32 bit color depth, which is usally the case since it is forced in win 8/10

    Solution: Go into your Red Alert 2 folder, in there you will find "game.exe", "gamemd.exe" "ra2.exe" and "ra2md.exe", right click -> properties -> compatibility, Enable "Reduced Color Mode: 16bit"

    2) High dpi scaling

    Solution: Go into your Red Alert 2 folder, in there you will find "game.exe", "gamemd.exe" "ra2.exe" and "ra2md.exe", right click -> properties -> compatibility, Enable "Disable Display Scaling on High DPI Settings"

    3) You chose a resolution that is not supported

    Solution: You can change your resolution via ra2.ini and ra2md.ini - try 1280*720 (If the file doesn't exist, create it)

    ScreenWidth=1280

    ScreenHeight=720
