C&C Red Alert 3 online serial number is invalid - bought with steam

I bought Command and Conquer Red Alert 3 from steam very recently and the single player works fine however when I try to connect online and I login about 2 seconds later I get a message “Serial number is invalid. Please try another”. This shouldn't happen since I just bought the game of steam.
