Umm. Instead of tabbing out, just save and exit your game, and restart it later? It's not like you can't save at any moment in the game... and launching C&C takes like, one second.
Though, in case you're not already using it, the cnc-ddraw addon probably fixes stuff like that. Though I suggest getting the full upgrade packs, then:
Command & Conquer Gold patch 1.06c
Both contain cnc-ddraw, plus higher game resolution and a ton of additional bug and error patching.
