Mind you, I'm not saying that the quality of the matchmaking is good in this game. It is absolutely not. The root problem here is that the algorithm used is way too simple. The current amount of medals is not a proper indicator of who should play against whom.
Unfortunately, EA never bothered to come up with a better solution.
Please also keep in mind that the human brain tends to see patterns where there aren't any. Randomness contains everything. This includes also the possibility that you get a very strong opponent right when you couldn't use it, like when you were about to level up a league. This does not mean that the game did this intentionally. Rivals simply knows no proper metric for who is the stronger player, since such a metric was never developed for this game.
