I realise this original post is a few years old but I'm trying to find out the same thing.
I am considering buying the C&C bundle because I would like to play the older games, specifically Generals and Red Alert 2.
1) What kind of tweaking is needed to play C&C Generals on windows 8.1 exactly?
2) Will I be able to run Red Alert 2 without too much trouble on Windows 8.1?
I can't say for windows 8. I got windows 10 & just bought the collection recently. So I'll post my experience so far for others lurking.
All this is dealing with single player. Not diving into multiplayer.
Generals works fine for me so far. Can't full-screen and stuff tho. Expected
I believe I needed to use a patch for RA2 to get it to work but I honestly haven't played it much yet & not aware if there are other issues yet.
I needed to patch first one and it still seems wonky so I don't play it.
Tiberium wars works fine so far. It's probably the most stable one so far on my end.
I haven't tried c&c 4 yet.
Red alert 3: Haven't played too much of it so idk about late game performance. I can't alt tab. The game will crash and I can't close out of it. Sometimes have to restart pc. You may experience sound issues & other quirks. Actually can't find solutions for ra3 and I've stumbled across many threads with people having issues with it. Sad cause I was really interested in this one.
Look elsewhere is my advice unless someone wants to step in with detailed solutions. I've had to tweak most of it to get to work & some aren't stable enough to play. I'm just disappointed with the purchase so far. They're great games but origin needs to look into this collection IMO to get things to properly work. I believe some of these solutions online are further complicated to do because of the origin launcher.
