Does running game in compatibility mode result in ban?

Hi. I am a new EA user and just created my account this week. I encountered a very strange ban and cannot figure out why. The ban history and EA replies give no info about it and I have to guess.

Below is a list of literally EVERYTHING I did with EA games. I never used EA services before and just created my account this week. And I am not sure how these actions could be relevant to violation of User Agreement.

  1.     Registered an account.
  2.     Bought CNC package.
  3.     Downloaded Red Alert 2.
  4.     Run the game and encountered black screen.
  5.     Quitted the game several times when finding solutions by ending the game process in Task Manager because it was impossible to exit the game normally in black screen. Could this be regarded as “interferes with or disrupts an EA service” in 6TH SECTION of User Agreement? (this is just a guess, I don’t know which part of User Agreement was violated)
  6.     When finding solutions, I changed the compatibility mode of several executable files (like RA2Launcher.exe) to "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)" through the file attribute setting. It didn’t work. Could this be regarded as “interferes with or disrupts an EA service” in 6TH SECTION of User Agreement too? (again this is just a guess)
  7.     After researching the internet, I found that using CnCNet could solve the black screen, so CnCNet is downloaded and used. Black screen is solved. I didn’t see anyone said they were banned by using CnCNet, and there is a solved topic in EA forum saying using CnCNet is not illegal, so this can’t be the reason of ban.

Is there anyone encountering similar problems? Thanks.

  • Please close this topic. It is found that such issues are common and EA is not interested in solving them. Viewers don't need to reply. I am leaving this platform. Thanks.

EA has always been supportive towards the fan-patching, probably indeed because it's really difficult to keep old games updated, and the C&C community is way ahead of anything they could do at this point. So no, no one's gonna sue you over using compatibility modes or fan patches.

Anyay, yea, a lot of the games have been upgraded with community-created unofficial patches, that fix a lot of their bugs and compatibility problems. You can find them here:

    Command & Conquer 1:

    Red Alert 1:

    Tiberian Sun:

    Red Alert 2:

    • I advise installing the CnCNet online play installer for RA2/YR. Even if you're not interested in online play, it comes with a bunch of automatic fixes. It should automatically take care of the "black screen on startup" issue, and has a configuration tool that allows further tweaking of the game's settings.

    Generals:

    • GenTool seems to be the main patch for Generals these days. The website is kind of vague on what it does besides restoring multiplayer and adding anti-cheat, but I heard it does a lot to make it work better on modern OSes too.
    • If you have issues with DirectX errors popping up, find and delete the file "dbghelp.dll" in the game's install folder.
