10 years agohow do i install C
I have Windows 7 OK, I have C&C Generals and Zero hour they won't install from the disk I keep getting a 1607 message. I really want to play the games but I'm Being stymied. Help me get these games ...
Error codes may seem rather abstract, but if you google that code combined with "install" you will quickly find out that this is "1607:Unable to install InstallShield Scripting runtime", and that there are loads of websites which list solutions for it.
The easiest fix seems to be to go to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files", find the InstallShield folder there, and delete it. This will cause InstallShield (the installer software used by the game) to reinstall itself the next time you run the game installer.
On a related note, since it's probably kind of silly of me to help you to get it installed if you can't run it afterwards anyway...
A recent update to Windows 7 and 8 disabled the SafeDisc driver, which is the system Generals and Zero Hour use as DRM. On these two, the driver can still be reactivated (google around for "KB3086255" to find ways around that), but on Windows 10, the change isn't an update but native in the system. This doesn't affect the installer, but it will prevent you from running the game after the installation.
Sadly, the only ways around this problem are to either buy the Origin version of the game (in The Ultimate Collection), disable/uninstall that update or reactivate that driver some other way (unless, as I said, you're on Windows 10), or find no-cd patches for the games (which, oddly, is probably the "cleanest" solution in this case).
