Original Command and Conquer freezing during game play

Hi, I am having an issue when playing the original C&C95 and the Covert Ops where at any point during game play, the game freezes and i get an error tone when i click the mouse. The only way I can exit the game is by pressing Esc. I am running Windows 10.

The issue seems to be intermittent and doesn't happen all the time, but when it does and I haven't saved the game it is very frustrating!

Anyone else having this issue too?

    @JP_GtiR Uh, where did you read anything like that? It works fine in Windows 10.

    The only thing that does not work on modern OSes is installing the game from its original CDs, since most PCs nowadays have 64-bit Windows operating systems, and the installers on the CDs are 16-bit programs, which 64-bit Windows refuses to run. This problem is the reason I made the full installer pack.

    where at any point during game play, the game freezes and i get an error tone when i click the mouse.

    This actually means the game has given an error message box, but you probably can't see it because your monitor switched to 640x480 resolution to run the game. Pressing [Esc] as you did simply closes the message box and the crashed game. [Enter] probably works too.

    Note, if you press [ctrl]+[c] at that point before closing it, you will copy the contents of the invisible text box to the clipboard, and then you can paste them in notepad later. I can actually look up the numbers on such errors and see what they mean.


    Note that the 1.06 patch fixes two quite common and completely fatal game crashes, namely the top-of-map reconnaissance crash and the stealth animation crash. So if the crashes you got before were possibly in one of the situations shown in these images, the 1.06 patch will most certainly fix those.

    @JP_GtiR Did you install any mods or made any modifications? Is it from The Ultimate Collection, CNCNet or disc? CNCNet offers a free download (EA made the game freeware on their website a few years back) of the original CNC with fixes already applied: https://cncnet.org/command-and-conquer

    Note that the default downloads offered by CnCNet are multiplayer-only stripped versions. If you download the games from there you have to be careful to scroll down until you get to the list of all downloads that includes the full game.

    No I've not installed any mods or made any modifications. Its just the Original C&C with the Covert Ops Package downloaded from Origin. 

    I read up on the Nyerguds web page about the 1.06 Patch but someone had written on there that it doesn't work with Windows 10?

    Oh right... It was a comment someone left in the more recent posts, perhaps they were talking about something else? Ah, you know what now you mention it, it does seem to be happening when i reach the top of the map! When it happens again,i will hit Ctrl+C and paste the error code and let you know. Thanks so much for you're help, its much appreciated.
