Re: CnC TW "unable to connect to other players"

Do you have LogMeInHamachi or some other virtual private network (VPN) program installed?

    Thanks for your reply.

I've just downloaded LogMeIn Hamachi, but I can't see how it would help playing in the online rooms. I basically don't know any of the people online, so I can't really create my own network, and there aren't many existing ones that I can find.

    (Sorry if I'm talking complete rubbish. Computer-illiterate ^^ )

It did occur to me that our wireless network is invitation-only and hidden – might that make a difference?

Hamachi ***** up your connection to the game. To fix it go to options - settings - network - IP and select the one that does not start with 5.xxx.xxx.xxx or something, most likely the correct one starts with a 1.xxx.xx.xxx.x or something like that. See if that works.

What's happening is that your computer detects the Hamachi network IP and tries to use it to connect to the game's servers. But you need to be using your actual online IP not the Hamachi one.

Ok, I've changed the IP address, but the only other one available to select is of the form 10.*.*.*, which doesn't seem long enough. I had this same connection problem before I downloaded Hamachi as well, and changing the IP address back again doesn't seem to have worked ☹️.

Perhaps the default IP address should be different? I'm not sure how to get a different one, if that's even possible.

Are you connecting from a college or corporate network? These tend to have IPs that start with 10. If so, you may need to contact your local LAN administrator for help.

    Thanks for your post.

The network is privately owned, but several computers are using the same modem and router. The other day the IP address was more like I would expect, of the form 172.**.***.*, but now it's back to a choice of 10.*.*.* and 5.**.***.**. None of the other computers on this connection play CnC or any other online games, as far as I'm aware.

If this is a problem with multiple terminals using one modem, can it be resolved? And could it explain the ability to connect to a very small proportion of players online but no-one else?

I could try connecting my computer directly to the ethernet cable from the modem and seeing if that helps. In the mean time, skirmishes with the AI it is.

Yes, try connecting directly with an Ethernet cable. A dynamic IP address is fine so addresses starting with 10 or 5 should not cause an issue.

I connected directly with the ethernet cable and it worked perfectly. However, the problem persists when using the WiFi. Are there any settings I can change (I do not have network administrator priveliges) that might help, or is it a problem with the servers or other users?

If you are not the server administrator or do not have any occasion to change settings, odds are that you will not be able to do anything about it not working with WiFi.

Barry probably knows better so I'll let him chip in on this one. 🙂

There is no problem with the servers or other users. A direct Ethernet connection is just more reliable and less prone to errors. Wifi is fine for just surfing the web where if there is a problem you just refresh the page. For online multiplayer games the connection needs to be more stable and an Ethernet connection provides that.
