Re: Command & Conquer - Windows 10 not launching

@PabloEsss You are talking about a pack of games developed over a period of 17 years, the oldest of which is about 22 years old now. They were all developed for completely different computers, and thus they all have very different problems. In other words, I'm going to need more details. Which games exactly have you tried, which ones didn't work, and what problems/errors did you encounter with each one?

Though, before that, you might want to get some preliminary patching done. Command & Conquer 1, Red Alert 1 and Tiberian Sun have all been upgraded with community-created unofficial patches that fix a lot of their bugs and compatibility problems. For Red Alert 2 there's a more general patch that solves a lot of its graphics problems. You can find them here:

Command & Conquer 1:

Red Alert 1:

Tiberian Sun:

Red Alert 2:

  • The graphics system patch DDWrapper is known to solve the "black screen" issue.
Download the zip file and extract "ddraw.dll" and "aqrit.cfg" into your game folder. Then, open the configuration file "aqrit.cfg" in Notepad, change the "ForceDirectDrawEmulation" option to 1, save the file, and the game should work.

thanks for responding. All of the games in the Ultimate Edition are not working.

I have tried the patches you have suggested and now receive the following messages:

CNC - Error Unable to Set video mode

Red Alert 1 - Crash alert, file dump created in 'RA95crash.dmp' and also then memory could not be read error message

Tiberian Sun - unable to set the video mode

I will retry the other versions and advise on error messages received.

ok so other games and the issues:

Red Alert 2 & RA2 Yuris Revenge - Error unable to set video mode

RA3 - Direct X Error 9.0 or higher needed, make sure video card meets minimum requirements & hardware acceleration disabled

Tiberium Wars / Kane - Same as RA3

C&C 4 Tiberian Twighglight - Flickering screen and same as RA3

Generals & Zero Hour - Direct X Error 8.1 or higher needed, ensure video card meets minimum requirements

  • Command and Conquer Ultimate was working OK in Windows 8.1 however, the moment I upgraded to Windows 10, the game does not load.  Correction, I can hear the game music in the background but no video, only black screen of death (BSOD).  This is a display issue related to Windows 10 being incompatible with Intel HD Graphics 4600 (and other cards).  This was a 'known problem' by Microsoft, but no warning was given to users.  Unless there is a miracle work around,  I will be forced to dump Windows 10 and roll back to Windows 8.1, or stop using Command and Conquer Ultimate Collection.

Uh, I'm 100% sure the patch I linked to solves the "unable to set video mode" error. In fact, if it still doesn't work, you can either change the game resolution to one supported by your monitor, or run the game in windowed mode. You can change the settings through the CCConfig tool in the game folder.

    @DeathDealerWest

You will get much faster response if you actually post a new thread about your issue instead of dumping it in some random existing thread.

Anyway, the RA2 issue you describe is fixed with the Red Alert 2 patch I linked to in my earlier post. It's not specifically about Win10 / Intel HD, as far as I know. It's a very common issue.

@robbiemoyer100 Please don't use a almost 4-years old topic to say things like this next time.... I also agree that EA could apply some fixes to it, but I just don't expect them ever doing it. Although they are releasing some remasters now... 🙂
  • Sorry, however, it is a 4 year topic but is still current. I down loaded 5 command and conquer games on my new computer with windows 10 and none would play without DirectX9. I could not download DirectX9 on my windows 10. To state I am frustrated would be mild.

@robbiemoyer100 Please try these solutions: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Command_%26_Conquer:_Generals#DirectX_8.1_error_.28Windows.29 Try them even if you think you've already done so and follow the instructions to the letter. Also, I saw a recent uprising of that DX9 issue. Me and @Nyerguds suspect it might have something to do with a recent update of Windows 10 or a recent graphics driver update... What type and brand of GPU are you using?
