I have found a solution to the funds problem in using Microsoft Edge.  It is not my default browser (never used in fact since building this PC) so when I started it up, it is as if it was straight out of the box ie no extensions, etc to complicate matters. 

I was able to buy funds by logging on at the start up page and going through the usual steps.  Once my funds purchase was completed, I closed Edge and reverted to playing using Chrome.
