Installed the update yesterday through the ea app and now just get a black screen in Zero Hour and Generals. Game runs can hear audio. Can hit enter to get out of the intro screen and can hear it switch over. But black screen.
Worked perfectly fine before the update.
It seems that, while all games in the collection were updated with modern compatibility systems, one old failure was still not resolved: the existence of some old libraries left over from the testing of the game are still in there, and they are known to foul things up.
To solve this, go into the game installation folder, and delete the file called "dbghelp.dll". There should be one in both the Generals folder and the Zero Hour folder; make sure to delete both of them.
Testing and patching is still going on on the collection, so hopefully future updates will make sure such issues are all smoothed out out-of-the-box.

Generals, Zero Hour, C&C3, Kane's Wrath and Red Alert 3 all used the Gamespy system for their online play, but that whole system has been shut down in July 2014, so online play hasn't been supported for pretty much a whole decade. And that's not really EA's fault, either; they're just one of the many companies whose slightly older games lost online support because of it. If you check the store, you will also see that online play is not actually indicated as supported on these games.
There are community servers you can use, managed by http://cnc-online.net/, but given the recent changes to the collection, it's not certain if their systems are already updated to handle the new way this collection's games are structured. So it might take a few weeks before all the ripples from this drop have faded away.
