Matchmaking is currently based on the league you're in and the medal count. If you are being matched against a player from a higher league with more than 300 medals difference, the match is considered a challenge match.

If you play very well and are being promoted fast, it can absolutely happen that you get matched against higher level players. Since all units are level capped in every league, that shouldn't have too much of an impact. Every unit on the field has a unit to be countered with =).
