Solved

Red alert is not playable for me

I saw SOOOO MANY "Solutions" for a better resolution on this game but nothing worked. Like "HIRES" typing in the home-screen. It will open more resolutions BUT if i choose one above 1024/786 it crashes again. I don't know if someone has this exact problem like mine. That you choose a higher resolution and it crashes. I tried ALOT but it didn't work. Hope that someone had the same problem like me but also got blocked without further solutions

I assume you're talking about Red Alert 2? The distinction is fairly important.

The solution is to ignore the in-game resolution choice, and instead go into the game's installation folder and change it in ra2.ini (for RA2) and ra2md.ini (for Yuri's Revenge). The menu will generally only list 4:3 resolutions, which may not match what your monitor supports. In the ini file, find the [Video] section, and adjust the ScreenHeight= and ScreenWidth= settings.

Do note... there's no such thing as "better" resolution. The game was designed to be played in 800x600 or 1024x768, and higher resolutions than that will just make everything look tiny.

Overall, to help you configure RA2, I suggest installing the CnCNet pack for it; it comes with a load of fixes and its own custom configuration tool. For the record, here are the community patches for all the games:

    Command & Conquer 1:

    Red Alert 1:

    Tiberian Sun:

    Red Alert 2:

    • I advise installing the CnCNet online play installer for RA2/YR. Even if you're not interested in online play, it comes with a bunch of automatic fixes. It should automatically take care of the "black screen" issue, and has a configuration tool that allows further tweaking of the game's settings.

    Generals:

    • GenTool seems to be the main patch for Generals these days. The website is kind of vague on what it does besides restoring multiplayer and adding anti-cheat, but I heard it does a lot to make it work better on modern OSes too.
