Red Alert2: Yuri's Revenge graphics Issue

Hi guys, I'm new to this forum so i am not sure if this is the appropriate place to ask this. I downloaded the RA2+Yuri's Revenge (YR) bundle today from origin since it was free  and played RA2 without any problems. Today I started YR and choose my faction, so far so good no problems whatsoever that other people were having with the games. Then the first mission loads and the screen goes black. Then it comes back and the screen is pressed against the left with black on the right. In addition to the 'halved' screens, the screen with the game playing (at normal speed and without lag) is miscolored- everything is purple, red, green, and blue pixels like the game cannot decide what colored pixels go where.

-----------------------------------------------------

Specs and Game Settings

-----------------------------------------------------

Windows 10 x64 bit

NVidea 610GT

I3 Processor (it shoudnt matter since the class is already much more advanced)

640x480 Resolution with 16 colors- full screened    (this was the same setting used for RA2 with which this problem, or any for that matter, did not occur)

Graphics setting- High

DirectX11 with 12 installed but not used since my card is not actually compatible

-----------------------------------------------------

Let me know if anyone needs any other pieces of information to help me out.

  • @lethwyn Wooah. Trippy.

The graphics system patch DDWrapper is known to solve a bunch of problems. It might help with this, too.

Download the zip file and extract "ddraw.dll" and "aqrit.cfg" into your game folder. Then, open the configuration file "aqrit.cfg" in Notepad, change the "ForceDirectDrawEmulation" option to 1, save the file, and launch the game again.

    [edit]

If you still have problems with RA2 even after this, I advise installing the CnCNet installer for RA2/YR. It comes with a bunch of automatic fixes, and has a configuration tool which offers more choices in graphics fixes than just DDWrapper, so if one doesn't work you can just try if some of the other options do the trick.

  • Hi All,

I posted up in another thread with similar graphical issues and game crashing.

I downloaded the patch in this thread and all seemed well! Until about 15 minutes into the game when it crashed.

    Had to hard reset.

I'm surprised they would still allow this game to be downloaded through origin and not put the effort into optimising the game for windows 10.

I can't imagine it would take very long for them to do so, and for all the people that aren't as tech savvy as others, it can get a bit confusing applying multiple patches and configuring properties.

Get crackin EA and fix it up!

    Thanks

Ehhh.... you lack imagination then. Getting old Windows games to run properly on new systems is not a trivial matter. This isn't like DOS games; you got one solution there, namely DOSBox, that just emulates DOS, and does it so well that everything simply works. But with windows games, you have generations of slightly different operating systems, not to mention CD copy protections and other DRM, which all react slightly different on more modern PCs. Even worse, some games contain actual bugs where they do stuff wrong in the system's memory, but older OSes simply never noticed it, and since newer ones are more strict on that stuff, that makes the program crash now. This stuff is not trivial at all.

My advice, install the CnCNet online play installer for RA2/YR. Even if you're not interested in online play, it comes with a bunch of automatic fixes, and has a configuration tool which offers a variety of choices in graphics output systems, so if one configuration doesn't work you can just try if some of the other options do the trick. And if you can't figure it out, hit up the CnCNet crew on their forum or their Discord channel; they can definitely help you out.

Really, if one solution doesn't work; do read a bit more. The original answer I gave here is four years old; we got more solutions now.

Anyway, I edited this info into the solution post now, so people can more easily find it.

  • I want to say thanks. 2020 and the fix still works, on windows 10 even!

the DDWrapper worked for me because all im trying to do is play the campaign.

Not sure if anyone is looking, but I also found a way through a bunch of searching to utilize your entire screen.

go into your game directory and type .ini  into the search field. open the ini file and modify the length and width. i normally have a 2560x1440 resolution but the game ends up being WAY too small. I went with 1280x720 and im back in action.

Thanks to everyone who keeps finding solutions for awesome old school games.

  • @Nyerguds works now thanks! now when the game starts and I am in the actual game/mission, the edges of the screen are cut off but an inch or two.I've tried adjusting resolution within game but it reduces the overall quality of the images, please advise, THANKS DUDE!
  • @Spazzdot I've tried all of the resolutions that my TV provides and they are all still off by an inch or two and it is cut off. Can't figure out how to tweak it to get it to that sweet spot. It's either always too small or too big with the top edges cut off.
  • @Nyerguds CnCNet works great for YR but for RA2 the screen is still cut off...it's frustrating as i've spent two days researching already. GOt rid of the black screen now it's just a matter of getting the screen to fit within my TV width and get to that 'sweet spot'.
  • @Nyerguds Thank you so much! The CnCNet online play installer for RA2/YR download worked for me! I am so grateful that you have been helping people with this issue and that I found this forum! Thanks for being there for us! I just updated parts in my PC and ended up with this same issue. I am happy that a fix from years ago still works on Windows 10. Thank you for everything!

  • does anyone have any advice after installing CNCnet? i installed it and it seemed to work fine but once i started playing the campaign on yuris revenge the map would constantly drift to the left.
