Rivals Challenge Battle

I can’t figure out what constitutes a challenge battle and what doesn’t. I’m in master league at average level 8, facing level 12 and 13 armies. Most of the time they are challenge battles but not always. Why are some challenge and others not? If I’m 5 levels below my opponent I don’t expect to win, but I don’t expect to lose medals either.
