The Source Code for Older C&C Games
I have to ask you EA, what is the reason that you haven't released the source code for either Tiberian Sun/Red Alert 2 or Generals/Zero Hour? Neither engine is being used anymore, so what's the issue? Are there some legal issues or something?
As these amazing games deteriorate more and more over time, I feel compelled to ask why you can't just let the community fix the increasing number of problems that are plaguing these games? It's understandable that you have no interest in fixing the problems yourselves after such a long time, but the community sure does. If you want to spur some interest in C&C and earn back some good will from the fans, this would definitely be the way to do it.
I'm motivated to ask, because I just got a random "Serious Error" (caused by the source code accessing a virtual memory address that it doesn't have access to) while playing my retail version of Zero Hour that booted me out of the game a few hours ago. This really frustrates me, because Zero Hour is still my FAVORITE game, issues of this sort seem to happen all of the time, and I know that they are just going to get worse as time goes on. Since EA won't release patches for these games, I'm hoping that maybe we could get some kind of idea as to when EA would let the community take a crack at it.
Look, I'm not asking for much. Even just a ballpark time-table on when it would MAYBE be possible to release the source code for any of the C&C games, or even just an explanation of what the real obstacle is that's preventing this from happening would satisfy me and the community. At this point, ANYTHING is better than nothing, because we honestly don't see a clear reason why this isn't happening from our perspective.
