Trouble running Tiberian Sun

Evening all!

A couple years ago, I purchased the Command & Conquer Ultimate Collection. I downloaded Tiberian Sun from that collection, but I was unable to play it. I assumed at the time it was my then terribly old laptop. A few weeks ago, I purchased a new Nitro 5 gaming laptop. Nothing fancy, but it gets the job done. I downloaded the very same game, and the first time I tried to run it, I was given the error: Missing required file "ssleay32.dll"

So, I tried to search the thread for a similar issue, and I was led to the advice to download these links from Microsoft:

  • vcredist_x86_vs2015 (for 32bit Windows version)
  • vcredist_x64_vs2015 (for 64bit Windows version)

I did, and now when I run the game, it opens, but once i select "start new campaign" the entire screen freezes and I'm forced to control alt delete and run the task manager to end the process.

I'm dying to play this nostalgic game i paid for years ago. Any advice?

Unless your laptop predates Windows 98, any issues you will have with it will never be caused by your PC being too old, and will practically always be because your PC is too new.

A lot of the games have been upgraded with community-created unofficial patches that fix a lot of their bugs and compatibility problems. You can find them here:

    Red Alert 2:

    • I advise installing the CnCNet online play installer for RA2/YR. Even if you're not interested in online play, it comes with a bunch of automatic fixes. It should automatically take care of the "black screen on startup" issue, and has a configuration tool that allows further tweaking of the game's settings.

    Generals:

    • GenTool seems to be the main patch for Generals these days. The website is kind of vague on what it does besides restoring multiplayer and adding anti-cheat, but I heard it does a lot to make it work better on modern OSes too.
    • If you have issues with DirectX errors popping up, find and delete the file "dbghelp.dll" in the game's install folder.
